Mcity runs several laboratories (test facilities) and CAV (Connected / Automated Vehicle) research programs. We are looking for someone to lead the team responsible for these labs, overseeing operations and planning improvements and new projects, and ensuring we are meeting the needs of the research and industrial partners who use these facilities. You will report to Mcity’s Associate Director.
Test Facility Operations
Coordinate with Mcity leadership, U-M researchers, and industry partners to operate the Mcity Test Facility, a specialized proving ground with essential infrastructure and vehicle assets for testing connected and automated vehicles and intelligent transportation systems.
Ensure adherence to and continue development of Mcity Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the safe operation of the test environment in collaboration with U-M EHS, U-M Risk Management, and Mcity Safety Committee.
Coordinate user training for safe and appropriate equipment operation and laboratory techniques.
Oversee the demonstration of technology and equipment capabilities.
Consult with lab users to refine or adapt methodologies to fit specific experiment requirements, and collaborate in the development of new techniques.
Create research methods and suggest options for improving the testing protocols and data collection.
Support lab tours and explain and demonstrate technology and equipment capabilities to audiences of varying levels of technical background.
Ensure adherence to Institutional Review Board approved protocols (including advising researchers in the process of obtaining U of M Institutional Review Board approvals).
Scheduling, Budgeting and Coordination of Use
With your team, coordinate the facility’s use and access, balancing complex partner priorities.
In collaboration with Mcity leadership and staff, ensure Mcity labs are operating within their allocated budgets and help plan future growth of the facilities.
Work with business administration to ensure billing and cost allocation according to facility usage, through standard U-M recharge and service unit billing procedures.
Laboratory Improvements and Projects
Conduct regular review of processes and coordinate iterative improvement plans
Measure user satisfaction and other metrics to improve service quality
Suggest and develop capital improvements for the Mcity Test Facility, vehicle fleet, and other labs
You will oversee a small but capable team who assist with daily operations, lab reservation procedures, and project management
Required Qualifications for Senior (in addition to Intermediate Qualifications)
5+ years of relevant experience in an R&D setting
Required Qualifications for Intermediate
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience
with 2+ years of relevant experience in an R&D setting
Professional experience with basic project management skills such as scheduling and budgeting
Connected and automated vehicle technologies expertise
Development vehicle testing expertise
Intelligent transportation systems expertise
Academic research experience
Knowledge of vehicle data acquisition systems
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
The salary range for the Senior level is $72,000 - 95,000.
The salary range for the Intermediate level is $55,000 - 71,000.
