Under general supervision, implements EH&S programs / policies in one or more of the following fields: industrial hygiene, laboratory safety, environmental health, pest control, environmental health (sanitation), occupational safety (ergonomics safety and prevention), environmental protection, radiation safety, hazardous materials control, and hazardous waste management (may include shipping). Manage, provide advice, analysis and recommendations to SIO researchers and staff regarding Injury Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) compliance requirements and all other safety related areas including: chemicals, fires, electrical, earthquake, biohazards, radioisotopes, lasers, and operation of equipment. Independently evaluate and recommend training designed to meet requirements of applicable mandates including: Injury and Illness Prevention Program, Worker's Right to Know Law, and Chemical Hygiene Plan. Conduct inspections of laboratories / facilities to ensure compliance with regulations, policies, and procedures; prepares reports. In partnership with the EH&S General Safety and Research Assistance Program personnel, perform regular inspections of spaces assigned to researchers and staff at SIO to ensure compliance with all safety regulations; remedy non-compliance issues by working with the responsible party to bring space into compliance with same.
Cultivate and maintain beneficial working relationships with internal stakeholders regarding UCSD and UCOP sustainability initiatives. Support sustainability related communication and promote sustainability awareness though the SIO sustainability website, newsletters, flyers, and e-mails. Coordinate and facilitate SIO sustainability meetings and groups
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific or engineering, or Public Health field and two years of professional experience in a comprehensive environmental health and safety program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Solid, comprehensive working knowledge / understanding of a specific EH&S field including related laws and regulations, and general understanding of all EH&S fields.
Solid organizational skills to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple projects.
Knowledge of fundamental chemical and biological research methods, equipment and procedures and protocols.
Knowledge of applicable local, State, and Federal environmental and safety regulations and policies.
Knowledge of environmental health and safety principles and practices.
Demonstrated experienced in monitoring and documenting safety-training programs.
Demonstrated experienced in performing and documenting on-site safety inspections and audits.
Ability to work independently to accomplish assigned goals, exercising good judgment to set priorities, schedule own work time, and meet deadlines. Ability to make decisions/solve programs exercising professional judgement, establish workload priorities to meet deadlines, and work both collaboratively and independently.
Demonstrated knowledge of the hazardous properties of chemicals and biological materials, and the approved procedures for handling and disposal of same, with the ability and willingness to keep knowledge current.
Ability to collect and collate information to produce accurate and concise reports. Proven analytical skills interpret, synthesize and communicate the information collected effectively.
Knowledge of environmental management policies, issues, and initiatives. Ability to implement policies and procedures related to the program. Ability to advocate for implementation of new policies and procedures to meet program needs.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of sustainability theories as well as local and national sustainability initiatives and best practices.
Proven ability to develop new projects within an academic setting; understanding of how to institutionalize new sustainability efforts.
Experience with energy, water, waste conservation and sustainability solutions. Ability to research and set short and long range plans for campus sustainability and resource conservation.
Prior experience working in the field of Occupational Health & Safety.
