The Rheumatology Division is seeking a Nurse Practitioner (NP) who would be responsible for direct care for patients with scleroderma and related diseases at the Johns Hopkins Scleroderma Center. The Johns Hopkins Scleroderma Center is a world-renowned expert center dedicated to the patients living with scleroderma and is one of the largest research centers for this disease in the world. This is a unique environment – with opportunities to contribute to direct and complex patient care, participate in research and contribute to patient education efforts.
In addition to direct patient care (office visits), NP would help manage between-visit care for patients with ongoing complex medical needs via phone and EMR communications. NP would also participate in clinical trials and observational research studies, performing study assessments and procedures. NP would create and disseminate patient education materials. Candidates should be able to exerciseindependent,professionaljudgment and decisionmaking on a consistent basis.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Perform direct patient care in an ambulatory setting for patients with scleroderma and related diseases (independently after period of training)
Order, perform and interpret laboratory and radiology tests within scope of professional practice
Prescribe medications including controlled substances to the extent delegated and licensed
Consult with rheumatology faculty physicians as needed
Assist physicians in management of patients between visits via telephone and EMR encounters
Assist physicians with complex medication management (i.e. immunosuppressants that require monitoring)
Prepare and maintain accurate patient records, charts, and documents to support sound medical practice and reimbursement for services provided
Comply with applicable laws and regulations with respect to collaborative agreements.
Provides oversight and quality control for various aspects of the operation of the clinical practice (i.e. help coordinate multi-disciplinary pulmonary review conference)
Provides support to the Johns Hopkins Division of Rheumatology Scleroderma Center Physicians for patient care
Triages incoming patient telephone calls and emails, ensuring correspondence in a timely manner
Retrieves diagnostic results, coordinates physiciansign-off of results,and calls patientswithresultsaccording to the direction of the Center physicians
Helps to complete prior authorization forms with relevant medical data and test results
Answers questionsfrom patients regardingphysicianinstructions,medications,prescriptionrefills, testing results, and/or other aspects of clinical care.
Assessesand/or managesfollow-upplans,specific to the patient's diagnosis.
Regularlygiveseffective,complete andaccurate instructions regardinggoodhealthmaintenance including disease preventionand management according to departmentguidelinesand under the supervision of a physician.
Collaborate with Research team regarding study participants and potential participants. Provide patient education regarding research as needed. Maintain required certifications.
Serve as team member for clinical trial protocols by performing physical examinations, study procedures and completing case report forms
Collaborate with organizations and payors to maintain continuity of care. This may include facilitation of letters of medical necessity for accommodations, appeals and prior authorizations for access to treatment, FMLA, Social Security, short- and long-term disability forms.
Coordinate with in-house pharmacy and outside manufacturer reps, maintain patient education materials and communicate updates and changes to patients and providers.
Review incoming potential new patient records for appropriateness for the Center and level of urgency.
Actsas a resource to health care staff and implements educationalprograms to improvehealthstatus of patients/families,taking into consideration the developmentalneeds of the patientsandfamilies.
Consistently requests consultations with appropriate departments when necessary.
Assumes responsibility and accountability for time management,professionalrelationshipsandinterpersonalinteractions.
Assumes responsibility for own professional developmentand remains current in clinical practice by attending relevantcontinuingeducation.
Maintains up to date knowledge of the EMR and other hospital-based software.
Other duties may be assigned by the Center co-directors to ensure an efficient office that will assist the Division in fulfilling its mission.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
BSNrequired with Master of Science Degree-preparedRegisteredNurse,Nurse Practitioner; required to complete JHBMC credentialingprocess prior to startdate.
Successfulcompletion of the nationalcertificationexaminationandcertificationas a nurse practitioner.NPlicensure in the state of Maryland.
Familiarity with regulationsandstandardsgoverning NPs in the state of Maryland
Controlled substance license.

Five years of direct patient care in internal medicine, family practice or medicine sub-specialty.
Demonstrated ability for self-direction and initiation required.
Demonstrated ability to function as a leader and team player required.
Basic computer skills required.
Experience with EPIC preferred.
Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:
Current Maryland State NP Licensure.
Completion of the JHU credentialing process.
Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.
Ability to stand, walk or sit for an extended period of time.
Finger Dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.
Ability to see within normal parameters.
Ability to hear within normal range.
Ability to lift 15 pounds.
Possible exposure to communicable diseases.
