The Office of Innovative Learning, Design, & Assessment Department (OILDA) is seeking a hourly Instructional Designer who will report to the instructional design team manager, and will work with full-time instructional designers, instructional technologists, assessment specialist, and JHU faculty to update and develop fully online, blended, and web-enhanced courses and modules.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Support full-time IDs as needed to assist with course updates, builds and reviews.
Support OILDA with the migration of fully online courses from Blackboard to Canvas.
Develop instructional materials, learning objects and media products for use in online and web-enhanced courses and websites including interactive activities, video, audio podcasts, and graphics.
Assist with updating digital content for courses and faculty & student resources and tutorials in the LMS.
Collaborate and consult with faculty, staff, and associates on the effective use of instructional design strategies, web-based resources, multimedia technologies, and instructional software and systems to improve teaching for online delivery.
Collaborate with teams of writers and subject matter experts to ensure instructional integrity of the course development projects through a method of systematic design and clear course standards and outcomes.
Provide recommendations for interface design, sequencing of instruction, use of assessments, and online interactive activities.
Manage project timelines and coordinate with team members and partners to meet project deliverables.
Closely collaborate with other members of OILDA including instructional designers, instructional technologists and assessment staff.
Support instructional technologists in designing and developing faculty training materials.
Occasionally support or collaborate with the assessment specialist on assessment rubric development.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Bachelor's Degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Education, or related field.
Three years of progressively responsible experience in course design and development, faculty training, or program/course assessment/evaluation required.
Advanced degree may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Six years' experience in Instructional Design.
Background or experience in K-12 and/or higher education.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of various instructional design models, strategies and best practices.
Must have strong communication (written and spoken) and interpersonal skills, and be able to deal with multiple constituencies and stakeholders of all levels.
Ability to exercise independent judgment and solve problems in creative and productive ways.
Knowledge of current and emerging instructional technologies and proven ability to adapt and learn new procedures and software programs.
Must have excellent project management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
Knowledge of pedagogical issues related to online teaching and learning as well as current and emerging technologies.
Familiarity with graphic design elements appropriate for online instruction.
Must have keen attention to detail and have strong oral, written, and editing skills, including knowledge of APA.
Knowledge of assessment and systems to support assessment preferred but not required.
Understanding of micro-credentialing preferred but not required.
Ability to train one-on-one and in a group setting, as well as the ability to collaborate with faculty remotely.
Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:
Demonstrated competency using Articulate Storyline, Rise or similar software (software not provided-candidate must have their own license).
Experience with learning management systems, Blackboard and/or Canvas preferred.
Experience with web-based technologies and presentation software (e.g., VoiceThread, Panopto, Canva, Genially, etc).
Experience with online conferencing software (e.g. Zoom).
Basic knowledge of streaming audio and video, compression methods, file types, and formats.
Working knowledge of Office 365 (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint), basic HTML editing software, and basic image manipulation software, such as Fireworks or Photoshop.
Graphic design experience a plus including experience with Adobe Illustrator.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
