The Johns Hopkins School of Education's IDEALS Institute (Innovation in Development, Engagement and Learning Systems) is focused on promoting high-quality early learning, developmentally appropriate care across the life-span, and impactful educational practices. This unit operates on a multi-million-dollar portfolio of work conducting applied projects at the national, state, and local levels. This unit is seeking several Instructional Design Specialists to build innovative learning experiences as part of the Workforce Development team's competency-based learning approach. This group is responsible for both creating, modifying, and curating content across 8 core teams within the Institute in order to provide a variety of credit and non-learning experiences that promote competent professionals in the key workforce sectors we target: currently child care and early education; special and gifted education; assistive/adult/medical and social service professionals.
This position is responsible for working with a team of subject-matter experts to develop content, define learning pathways through 3rd-party content, and design learning experiences that help leaners of all backgrounds and experiences meet with success in building their competency. Additionally, this position will be responsible for ensuring accessibility through an integrated UDL approach.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for multi-modes of learning and understanding of pedagogical and andragogical theories. Developing learning experiences will yield a variety of traditional credit, continuing education credit, as well as noncredit and 3rd-party credits. The candidate will find creative ways to make learning experiences and assessments more efficient, effective, and engaging to meet the needs of learners with a wide range of knowledge and experience. We are seeking innovators who understands foundational approaches while embracing and applying new ways of meeting learners' needs from young children through adulthood.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Support the development of learning solutions for project audiences, including modules, assessments, and learning objects for formal and informal instruction for key education stakeholders in the field.
Continually improve and maintain existing web-based learning resources through design, evaluation, and revisions/enhancements.
Support the offering of UDL, ADA, Section 508 and WCAG 2.0 compliant content for online learning assets (i.e., ensure all videos, content, and graphics are properly developed with ADA and Section 508 guidelines).
Collaborate with the frontend development team, visual designer, and instructional technologist to build innovative learning experiences.
Implement quality assurance processes to ensure that the online experiences are functional and error free.
Coordinate access and deployment activities with various teams to ensure that the learning experiences meet project goals, scope, and timeline.
Collect, analyze, and report data on the program progress, challenges, and areas for improvement.
Develop and implement instructional design/development processes.
Support and implement creative solutions for instructional design and development processes for individual projects.
Contribute to staff development opportunities that will promote teaching, learning, and assessment in areas related to learning strategies, instructional technology, and learning outcomes.
Assist with writing, copy editing, and scripting for online learning solutions.
Collaborate with subject matter experts across IDEALS in the design, development, and delivery of online courses.
Lead and directly provide instructional design, development and evaluation services for IDEALS online learning experiences in collaboration with the project team.
Represent IDEALS at larger School, University, and field-based workgroups, committees, and conferences related to instructional design, learning, and UDL.
Level of Independent Decision Making:
This position independently meets with internal stakeholders to define project requirements, update on project progress, needs, and resources and makes follow-up plans independently, scope and deadline change recommendations to the Assistant and/or Director of Workforce Development.
This position works collaboratively with all members of Workforce Development team, and directly interfaces with all members of the organization.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Minimum Bachelor's Degree required in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Education, or related field.
Minimum of three years progressively responsible experience developing technology-based learning projects and programs.
Advanced degree may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Graduate Degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology or related field preferred.
Four or more years of progressively responsible experience developing technology-based learning projects and programs; with management experience preferred.
Quality Matters (QM) or Online Learning Consortium (OLC) certification is preferred.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Experience with and vision for applying gamification, X-API, open-badging, micro-credentialing, and competency-demonstration into a variety of learning experiences.
Experience in the practical application of instructional design theory.
Skilled in all instructional design processes, needs assessments, design, development, teaching, implementation, and evaluation/assessment, including developing rubrics.
Expertise in e-learning authoring tools such as Articulate Storyline.
Expertise in web conferencing tools (e.g., Zoom) and learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard).
Knowledge of social media tools and their application in teaching, learning, and research.
Skilled in content editing and scripting for video production.
Knowledge of multimedia authoring software and project management methodologies and tools.
Knowledge of lecture and screen capture tools such as Camtasia, Adobe Presenter, etc., as well as content delivery methods such as green screening, branch navigation, applications of VR/AR in eLearning, infographics, simulations, and interactive videos.
Ability to research new technology tools beneficial to promoting engaged learning and teaching.
Ability to collect data, analyze data, create reports, and prepare written communication with an attention to detail and accuracy.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a varied constituency including faculty, staff, students, and industry representatives.
Strong attention to detail and highly organized.
Knowledge of and proficiency in the use of MS Office Suite software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for corresponding, analysis, information storage, and presentation.
Knowledge of graphic design software is a plus, or at least a track-record of conveying ideas to graphic designers for creation.
Must possess strong leadership and interpersonal skills, and emotional intelligence as demonstrated by a personal style which facilitates collaborative relationships while effectively managing projects
Must be comfortable working in a matrixed environment, but with clear lines of accountability and responsibility
Must be highly motivated, productive, and results oriented
Strong spreadsheet and data visualization skills with competency in the use of SmartSheet/project management software
Ability to multi-task and must be organized and project oriented
Will demonstrate relevant analytical and decision-making managerial skills
Be willing to roll up sleeves, thrive in a start-up culture, and willing to pitch in as needed
Must want to make a difference and be mission oriented
JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
