The Beamish Lab in the Internal Medicine Department/Division of Nephrology is seeking a highly-motivated, independent, and bright experimentalist for a senior Research Technician position. Our lab studies the regeneration of renal epithelial cells. Our goals are to discover new ways to promote recovery after kidney injury and harness the regenerative potential of renal epithelia to develop alternatives to dialysis. We work under the broad umbrella of the Dressler lab in the Department of Pathology. The candidate’s role will be assisting the PI in managing multiple research projects and maintaining mouse colonies. Additionally:
• The successful candidate for this position will possess basic skills relevant to managing mouse colonies, harvesting and processing mouse tissue, cell isolation and culture, DNA/RNA/protein extraction from tissues and cells, immunoblot and qRT-PCR, immunostaining, microscopy, and image analysis.
• The successful candidate will also possess some advanced skills. Examples of desirable advanced skills include experience in: flow cytometry and FACS, construction of engineered culture platforms, microfluidics and micromolding techniques, single cell/single nucleus isolations, experience preparing animal/IRB/IBC protocols, microsurgical techniques, rodent survival surgery.
The individual will be a key member of the team and will work closely with the PI. Depending on stage and productivity there will be opportunities to participate in assembling manuscripts and attending national meetings.
The PI is a nephrology physician-scientist at Michigan Medicine and the Ann Arbor VA with extensive training in renal pathophysiology, engineered culture systems, and biomaterials. The successful candidate is required to function as a senior research technician in a nephrology research laboratory. The successful candidate is expected to work with minimal supervision and to carry out the following duties:
Conduct in vivo and in vitro experiments, collect and process samples, collect and analyze data, and assist in developing new and/or specialized research methodologies.
Manage a transgenic mouse colony.
Oversee general lab and equipment maintenance, supplies, inventory, and organization.
Assist in the supervision and training of junior lab members (e.g. undergraduate students, and/or junior technicians) in routine lab techniques and lab safety.
Disseminate information to laboratory staff through presentations and assist with abstract, manuscript, grant, and budget preparation.
Contribute to preparation and updating of regulatory protocols and revisions (i.e. animal/IRB/IBC protocols, IACUC, EHS, etc).
Senior Level: Bachelors’s degree or higher in a biological science or related field and 1-2 years of experience.
Intermediate Level: Associate's Degree and 1-3 years experience or equivalent combination of education and experience either professionally or as part of their educational training.
Physical requirements: ability to reach by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction; finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm; ability to see and hear within normal parameters, lift, carry, move supplies, computers, glassware, etc. ability to move about workspace, ability to perform delicate microdissection and microsurgeries.
Mouse experience is mandatory. Must be able to handle rodents and comfortably perform in an environment with exposure to animals, animal dander, animal byproducts, and bedding materials.
Must have experience with basic molecular and cellular biology techniques and tools including: isolation of DNA, RNA, and protein from tissue and cultured samples, PCR, Western blot, immunostaining of tissue sections and cell preparations, cell culture.
Must be detail-oriented, highly responsible, and possess excellent organizational, interpersonal, and written and oral communication skills.
Must be willing to learn new techniques and troubleshoot new protocols.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within the broader research group.
Ability to organize and analyze experimental data using software such as Microsoft Excel and Graphpad Prism and prepare publication quality figures.
Master’s degree with 3-5 years of demonstrated research experience through publications strongly preferred.
The following skills are strongly desired for this position:
• Microscopy, including immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence, and image analysis in FIJI • Flow cytometry, FACS • Microdissection/microsurgical skills
