The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and Biosafety Coordinator, under general supervision, coordinates, provide supports and oversees the review and approval process of all research activities involving Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to support compliance of the animal care and use program in accordance with federal, state and local regulations and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) to support compliance with the biosafety program in accordance with federal, state and local regulations.
Handle research involving animals and biological materials within the university.
Responsible for the review and evaluation of incoming submissions based on federal regulations for completeness. Perform extensive pre-review before assigning submissions to committee members or the committee agenda meeting guided by detailed Standard Operating Procedures and reviewer checklist.
Provide guidance to researchers completing submissions throughout the review process, including one-on-one consults to deliver timely and accurate advice to researchers during the application process.
Provide administrative assistance to the IACUC and IBC, including tracking submissions, annual review, or de novo due dates. Responsible for committee management, including onboarding/exiting committee members, updating committee rosters, scheduling committee meetings, taking and finalizing committee minutes.
Participate in the development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with required protocols, laws, and regulations for IACUC/IBC.
Maintain registrations for IACUC and IBC, including preparation of PHS, USDA and AAALAC report documents.
Provide other support to IACUC and IBC.
Assist in lab inspections:
Assist the IACUC in the preparation, organization, and conduction of Semi-Annual inspections of the animal facility and laboratories.
Assist the IBC in the preparation, organization, and conduction of lab inspections.
Draft inspection reports.
Effectively communicate inspection findings to study teams.
Perform inspection rechecks for any noncompliance found.
Performs routine and for-cause monitoring of protocols during the performance of the study and ensures the research/activity is conducted as approved. Assist in recommending the initiation of investigative procedures, responding to alleged violations of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures, investigating possible violations, and drafting investigation reports with oversight from the Director, Research Compliance.
Ensures and maintains accurate records are kept, including IACUC/IBC protocols, researcher training and Occupational Health Enrollment verification.
Develop and evaluate a variety of reports for internal and external audiences.
Participates in quality improvement process to evaluate ways to improve the research compliance program. Present ideas to Director of Research Compliance.
Cultivate contacts and serves as liaison between faculty/staff and the Office of Research Compliance in all areas of responsibility.
Provide staff back-up support for other committees, including the Institutional Review Board (IRB).
Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Entomology, Environmental Science, Fishery Resources, Management Information Systems, Microbiology, Plant Science, Wildlife Resources, or related.
Two (2) years of related experience in animal research, microbiology, legal field or similar.
Basic knowledge of animal techniques including anesthesia, aseptic technique, and drug administration as well as recognition of normal animal behavior and appropriate handling of laboratory animals.
Basic knowledge of safe laboratory practices when working with biohazards and recombinant DNA and biosafety levels.
Experience working with research compliance issues in a professional setting or working in an academic research laboratory setting.
Experience performing laboratory or facility inspections.
Highly organized with excellent attention to detail. Ability to handle a variety of projects simultaneously.
Self-motivated individual with ability to prioritize incoming submissions and workload to meet strict deadlines.
Experience developing and delivering presentations to small and large audiences.
Ability to interpret auditors and customer's requirements and needs; and convert into a corrective action that will be effective to meet regulatory requirements.
Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining computerized databases and tracking systems.
Intermediate skills with Research Compliance Administration software.
Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
Experience independently researching, compiling, developing, and summarizing material for reports, and analyzing information.
Experience identifying complex problems, defining alternatives, and developing recommendations for management/ administrators.
Experience working in iRIS research compliance software program.
Specialized training or certification, including:
ABSAs Advanced Biosafety Training Series;
Certified Biological Safety Professional;
Registered Biosafety Professional;
Certified IACUC Professional (CIPA) Certification
Additional Salary Information: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
This is a temporary position for six (6) months with an opportunity to extend.
