The Radiation Oncology Department seeks a Research Technologist to manage daily operations of research laboratory investigating cancer therapy using magnetic nanoparticles for magnetic hyperthermia in combination with ionizing radiation, immunotherapy, toxicity and biodistribution, and other effects of nanoparticle interactions with biological systems. Recently graduated or soon to graduate (Spring 2021) baccalaureates with intent to attend graduate or medical school in the future will be given consideration.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Under the general supervision of faculty investigator or laboratory supervisor, is responsible for performing routine cell line culturing, analyses and tests on nanoparticle suspensions, animal or human fluids and/or tissue cultured cell lines, and perform routine monitoring of research animals (rodents).
Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. Uses basic understanding of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention.
Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include:
Basic tissue culture
Cell separation methods
Basic molecular biology
Other specialized histology and biological science techniques
Will utilize in vivo models for experiments.
Harvests cells, blood, and tissue specimens for iron analysis.
Expected to perform minor rodent procedures that involve IP, IV, IM, and SC injection techniques.
Contributes to general maintenance of the laboratory, equipment, and supplies.
Will work with faculty, postdoctoral fellows, undergraduate, and graduate students.
Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard lab formulas and procedures.
Operates basic and advanced laboratory equipment including:
Laminar flow hood
Radiofrequency (RF) device
Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) (30% of the time)
Operates lab computer for lab entry (20% of the time)
Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials.
Complies with department and lab policies for COVID-19 precautions, data collection and management, biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace.
Monitors biohazard/radiation safety standards and proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace.
Monitors inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Keeps current knowledge of vendors and suppliers of materials specific to the laboratory requirements.
Monitors equipment performance and maintenance schedules.
May perform routine repair or replacement of standard parts.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Bachelor's degree in bioengineering, biomedical engineering, pharmacology, biology, molecular biology or related field.
Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
Experience in laboratory methods/techniques associated with biochemistry, basic cellular and molecular biology from undergraduate studies or other laboratory training.
Previous experience with rodent handling is advantageous.
Degree of Independent Action Performed on Job:
Work is largely independent with limited supervision.
Contacts with faculty, Research Associate, other laboratory technologists and staff within the department.
Will have extensive contact with collaborators of the faculty supervisor in the Schools of Medicine, Engineering, and Public Health.
Some contact with personnel in other institutions, i.e., other researchers, faculty and staff, and with representatives of companies.

Will be supervised by principal investigator and Research Associate.
