Dr. Espinoza-Fonseca’s laboratory in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine is looking for a laboratory technician with at least 2-3 years of experience in molecular/biochemical lab work and animal experimentation.
Dr. Espinoza-Fonseca’s lab is interested in understanding the fundamental molecular motions and interactions that are responsible for regulating calcium transport in muscle cells, and designing effective molecular therapies to treat human diseases associated with dysregulation of calcium transport in the muscle cells.
We are looking for a highly motivated research technician with experience in bench research interested in the mechanisms of calcium dysregulation diseases, who can work with minimal supervision and resolve most concerns that arise independently. This individual will be involved in multiple overlapping and concurrent projects.
Perform experiments and assays related to designing effective molecular therapies to treat human diseases associated with dysregulation of calcium transport in the muscle cells. These include but not limited to: mammalian cell culture; protein production in cell based systems; protein extraction, purification and quantification; enzymatic activity assays; recombinant DNA production; immunoblotting, quantitative RT-PCR and animal handling. Troubleshoot problems and recommend solutions. Evaluate experiment results using statistical and multivariate analysis.
Help with lab compliance (EHS, IACUC), maintain lab chemical inventory, maintain lab chemical waste storage and disposal.
Help students and others in methods and instrument operation.
Bachelor’s degree plus 2-3 years of research experience.
This individual must be self-motivated and perform well under pressure as well as without set deadlines. This individual must be meticulously organized and detail-oriented.
Experience with protein extraction (from cell cultures and from tissue), gel separation and immunoblotting.
Sterile technique and cell culture experience, especially working with immortalized human cell lines and stem cell lines.
Prepare laboratory reagents and solutions.
Experience working with mice. Intraperitoneal, intravenous, oral gavage drug delivery, blood collections (via tail nick, facial vein, or cardiac puncture) and tissue harvest.
Experience with standard molecular biology work, including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, cloning, plasmid generation, etc.
Experience with human induced pluripotent stem cell differentiation into cardiac myocytes.
Experience with enzymatic activity measurements.
Experience with myocyte cell isolation.
