The Department of Medicine seeks a Sr. Physician Assistant. The Carol Johns Advanced Practice Provider (CJ APP) will work collaboratively as a member of the Carol Johns Service, a multidisciplinary care team that provides comprehensive care to patients with advanced lung diseases. This position is a nocturnist role, with the core working hours of 7pm to 7am.
The CJ APP will be granted affiliate staff privileges by the Johns Hopkins Hospital Medical Board; these privileges list specific tasks and are reviewed annually.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Obtain history and perform physical examinations on newly admitted and follow-up CJ patients.
Write orders for medications, procedures, non-invasive mechanical ventilation, and other treatments as necessary.
Participate in daily sign-outs to report progress of specific patients and help to develop care plans.
Perform procedures such as arterial catheterization, central venous catheterization, and thoracentesis and will instruct residents in optimal performance of these procedures.
Educate patients and families regarding the nature of their clinical problems, prognoses, and options for continued care.
Participate as a teacher and as a learner in educational activities in the Carol Johns Service and Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
Ability to incorporate into practice theoretical concepts and advanced clinical skills with patients, families, and interdisciplinary health care team members. Analytical abilities are necessary to diagnose patients and to develop and implement plans of action for long and short term management of acute and chronic health. Advanced interpersonal skills are necessary to communicate effectively with all members of the interdisciplinary health care team to enhance collaboration and problem-solving. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are necessary to provide information to patients and health care personnel. The CJ APP must be able to function effectively in a fluid, dynamic, and rapidly changing environment.
Bachelor's degree; Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body; Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program. Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Requires minimum of 3 years' experience in related clinical area (in inpatient intermediate medical care and/or critical care unit; ICU or hospitalist experience), and obtained proficiency in area of specialty. Prefer at least 5 years' experience. Residency or fellowship programs in area of specialization may substitute for some experience. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

Medical critical care experience is preferred but not essential.
Prior experience with advanced lung disease patients, such as those with interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, and cystic fibrosis is preferred, but not essential.
Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to lift patients, 50 lbs. or more. Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.
