The Department of Medicine, Infectious Diseases seeks a Research Technologist to assist with microbiology methods and mouse colony and mouse management and other experiments as assigned and will collect and analyze the experiment data.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Follow established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include: basic tissue culture and 3D tissue culture, basic molecular biology, or other specialized histology and biological science techniques.
Coordinate mouse breeding and experiments. Collect mouse samples (such as stool and tail snips) for analysis. Actively participate in animal experiments including culturing stool bacteria. Infect animals through the oral route using designated equipment. Potential for germ-free mouse work. May need to administer antibiotics or other anti-infective to animals using specially prepared antibiotic water or oral gavage.
Maintain accurate, detailed data records of samples, sample use and site of storage in laboratory notebooks and electronically on file servers, database(s) as directed, ensuring the appropriate file backup, description, accuracy, and completion.
Collect, organize and analyze experimental data and interpret findings. Prepare reports of findings by compiling/annotating results, and preparing figures/tables, when required, using various software applications, such as Excel spreadsheets.
Participate in general laboratory tasks, including maintenance of lab equipment and ordering materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Monitor inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies. Prepare solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures. Use universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials.
Assist in the cultivation of bacteria such as Bacteroides fragilis strains (Biosafety Level 2).
Handle bio-hazardous material under Biosafety Level 2 conditions.
Meet weekly with designated laboratory staff to review recent data, troubleshoot current experiments, review new experimental protocols and prioritize new experiments.
Time flexibility for working hours required to process specimens and conduct some experiments such as when working with germ-free mice.
Participate in weekly lab meetings.
Prioritize daily tasks and responsibilities appropriately.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or a related field is required. Some prior laboratory experience and mouse experience desirable.

Demonstrate organization, curiosity, problem solving, resourcefulness, and flexibility

Physical Requirements:Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or laboratory environment.
