Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume): Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Three (3) years of experience in a safety, health, environmental, or a related field. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Industrial Hygiene, Safety, Health Sciences, or a related field. Three (3) years Industrial Hygiene experience. Experience with calibration and use of industrial hygiene equipment. Knowledge in laboratory analysis and interpretation of results. Familiar with OSHA, NIOSH and ACGIH exposure standards. Experience performing workplace inspections and hazard analysis. Experience developing safety programs and policies. Safety training experience. NYSDOL/USEPA Asbestos certification for Asbestos Inspector, Management Planner and/or Supervisor.
Brief Description of Duties : The Safety Specialist will develop and implement safety and health programs that focus on industrial hygiene principles and practices, including but not limited to identifying, evaluating, and controlling real or potential workplace environmental stressors or hazards that can affect the well being of workers and campus community members. The Safety Specialist will conduct facility inspections and perform hazard assessments and investigations for air quality, mold, noise (hearing conservation) and exposure monitoring specific chemical hazards and toxic substances (asbestos, lead, silica dust, formaldehyde, etc.). The position will also assist with management and oversight of remediation projects for asbestos, mold, mercury, PCB's, lead based paint and flooding events, perform pre-renovation/demolition/maintenance inspections, and respond to assist with environmental spills and remediation projects.
Industrial Hygiene Support Conduct Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) investigations, including but not limited to visual inspections, occupant interviews and sampling of the building's temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds. Respond to odor complaints and perform mold assessments including microbial sampling and moisture testing of building materials. Coordinate findings and corrective actions with facilities maintenance staff, Building Managers and user departments.
Conduct hazard assessments and perform personal exposure sampling and area monitoring for hearing conservation and respiratory protection programs, and to evaluate potential exposures to other chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic work conditions. Prepare Chain of Custody forms, ship and/or deliver samples for laboratory analysis, and prepare industrial hygiene survey monitoring reports, including recommendations for personal protective equipment and other controls for affected departments.
Conduct IH equipment calibration and preventative maintenance. Maintain exposure monitoring program records, track and report on status of programs, maintain database and generate required reports. Assist with the development of EH&S policies, procedures, safety publications and training, as needed.
Remediation Project Management Support Assist with the management and oversight of remediation projects and activities for asbestos, mold, mercury, PCB's, Lead Based Paint and flooding events. Prepare and post abatement notices, assist with obtaining account numbers for billing, attend project meetings, schedule projects and conduct pre-abatement walkthroughs. Coordinate the shutdown of building systems, hookup of temporary electrical power and water sources, placement of negative pressure equipment and exhaust locations, and placement of waste containers. Coordinate access to and control of work spaces and provide escort as required. Inspect work sites and ensure fire safety systems are maintained. Oversee project monitor, air sample technicians and abatement contractor for compliance with regulations, contract requirements and scope of work. Promptly report and document any variation and deficiencies. Maintain project records including permits, monitoring reports, waste manifests, and abatement contractor documentation (NYSDOL, USEPA, NYSDEC permits, NYSDOT permits).
Facility Inspections Perform facility inspections for renovation, demolition and maintenance projects and for laboratory close-out. Assist with review of proposed renovation/construction plans and documents, respond to maintenance requests for hazard identification, evaluate regulated materials which may be impacted through field inspection, assist with obtaining account numbers for billing, work with and coordinate with campus project managers responsible for renovation or maintenance work, obtain samples, prepare Chain of Custody, arrange for and ship and/or deliver samples for laboratory analysis, perform tests as required and prepare survey reports, identify, assess and quantify materials in accordance with EPA and NYS Codes, prepare inspection report, scope of work and cost estimates for review and approval of supervisor
Perform general inspections of Mechanical Equipment Rooms (MER), public spaces, hallways, staircases, custodial closets, universal waste storage areas and other maintenance areas. Identify hazards, electrical hazards, trip hazards, cleanliness, lighting issues, pest issues, and condition of insulation materials, appropriate signage and other safety issues as they exist.
Emergency and Spills Response Respond to emergencies and assist with the assessment, containment and mitigation of environmental spills, releases and other emergencies. Provide support for the EH&S Fire Marshal Hazmat Team and Laboratory Safety group. Assist with the coordination of outside Environmental Spill Response Contractor and regulatory agencies. Keep and maintain spill response records and provide reports as required.
Training & EH&S Support Attend training and maintain certifications for NYSDOL/USEPA Asbestos Inspector, Management Planner and Supervisor. Provide support for departmental events and activities, including the annual EH&S Fire & Safety Expo, Earthstock and other campus events.
Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes: This is a full time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
