The Department of Urology has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist 1. Evaluate human spermatozoa and testicular cells using standardized cellular and biochemical techniques and novel experimental approaches. Culture human testicular cells. Perform semen analysis, sperm cryopreservation, insemination preparation and testicular sperm retrieval techniques. Perform research under direction of Lab Director. Suggest and evaluate novel research and methods. The applicant will work on projects designed to develop novel methods to test sperm dysfunctions and culture human germ cells, as well as perform routine scientific work, evaluating, selecting and applying standardized and modified scientific procedures and techniques to assignments with clear, specific objectives. Responsibilities: In the Male Fertility Laboratory: •Interact in a collaborative manner with other team members and clinic staff to accomplish organizational goals. •Aseptic handling and processing of human sperm and testis samples. •Basic semen analysis and clinical sperm function tests. •Assist with maintenance and quality control. In the Andrology Research Laboratory: •Using accepted methods and techniques, solve well-defined problems and perform specific and limited portions of broader projects, under technical guidance of the Laboratory Director. •Make minor modifications to research procedures or propose new research techniques to accomplish research goals. •Develop cell culture techniques for pre-pubertal and adult human germ cells. •Aseptic handling and processing of sperm and testis samples in biosafety cabinets. •Maintenance, quality control and cleaning of instruments and equipment. Collection and Documentation of Data (both labs): •Provide complete and precise data for clinical tests in worksheets and log book. •Accurately transfer clinical data to final reports. •Provide finalized data for publication and preliminary data for grant applications. •Demonstrate proficiency in data collection and statistical analysis. •Maintain documentation, files and notebooks. Supervision: Works under limited supervision to complete assigned tasks/projects demonstrating an ability to work independently. Attention to detail is a critical requirement. Overall direction will be supplied by the PI in routine meetings. The employee will be responsible for following these general guidelines and for making adjustments to these directions as the need arises. Shift Information: MONDAY-FRIDAY 8 hours per day during the period of 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM with rotating WEEKEND (3-4 hour/day) coverage in Male Fertility Lab, and occasional work outside of the regular work week as required to maintain cell cultures, etc. As a UW employee, you will enjoy generous benefits and work/life programs. Requirements: A Bachelor's degree in the basic biological sciences is required with an emphasis in one of the biology disciplines; up to one year's experience in a related area; some or all may be in relevant educational programs. Candidate must be willing to work with human body fluids and biohazards, including, but not limited to, human blood, semen and testis. The candidate will be required to participate in the Occupational Health Program. The candidate will be required to attend, participate, and pass (where required) the University of Washington’s training courses in Bloodborne Pathogens, Chemical Hazards, and additional courses as required for successful completion of job duties. Responsibilities are task oriented therefore some weekend and evening work will be required. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must demonstrate excellent hand-eye coordination. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration. Desired: Ability to generate tables and queries in a database is desirable. Experience in the handling and processing of human tissues and blood is highly desired but not a requirement. Conditions of Employment: This position requires flexibility in the working hours, including extension into the evening when processing of specimens mandates, and on occasion requires working outside of the standard work week.
