Position Summary:

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Technician for the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Conducts lab experiments.
  • Supports the drafting of manuscripts/grants/protocols/patents.
  • Manages supply chain/equipment.
  • Technicians will also be exposed to practical skills in regulatory science and on the preparation of biologic medicines under GMP guidelines.

    General Summary
    Under the immediate guidance and direction of a senior technician or other supervisor, provides routine technical support relative to scientific research work or projects of a laboratory and/or teaching program.

  • Collects and completes basic preparation of samples and specimens.
  • Performs standard and repetitive physical, chemical, and biological tests on materials, substances, and/or living subjects.
  • Prepares media, substances, solutions, and reagents and performs related duties as required.

    Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Requires a high school/vocational school education or equivalent with coursework completed in the relevant science area(s) and one year of research study experience.
  • An equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience.
  • Requires a practical understanding and a working knowledge of basic scientific techniques, and the ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
  • Requires the ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs.
  • May require a valid driver’s license, two years driving experience, and successful completion of the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.
  • Regular workweek may include evening and/or weekend work.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors (or equivalent) in biomedical engineering, microbiology, biochemistry or related discipline.
  • Two years of relevant lab-based experience.
  • Previous experience with the following abilities is preferred: cell/tissue culture, plasmid construct design, plasmid purifications, transfections/transductions, PCR and RT-PCR
  • Knowledge of software for statistical tools, visual aid preparation, and complex data analysis (eg FloJo) is desired.

    Special Conditions:

  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Must be able to independently conduct literature surveys and understand technical documents.
  • Must be computer literate with experience in data analysis, manuscript preparation, and technical writing.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (or equivalent) tools for work processing, presentation preparation, and data analysis is required.
  • Ability to work in a lab environment including use of chemical and biological hazardous materials.
  • Must be comfortable conducting research with rodents and clear relevant medical tests.
  • Must learn and follow all relevant safety regulations associated with working in lab environment.
