Currently we have an exciting opportunity for an individual who wants to advance their career as a Certified Pacemaker Cardiac Technician Temporary, Full-Time Position Overview: The Pacemaker Technician is a member of an interprofessional team providing care to patients with cardiac implanted electrical devices (CIED) within a patient and family centered model of care. Within the Device Clinic, the clinician will work in collaboration with Registered Nurses (i.e., RN and RN-EC), Physicians, and the patient/family in the assessment, planning and delivery of safe and quality patient care. Primary Responsibilities: Diagnostic / Cardiac Device Procedures - Prepares and assesses patient (e.g., identification, consent, medical/lifestyle history, instruction of procedure).
- Performs diagnostic procedures such as electrocardiograms (ECG) and pacemaker analysis/ reprogramming.
- Evaluates lead placement using Programmable System Analyzer (PSA) during device implantation and troubleshoots.
- Monitors patient during and following procedures (e.g., ECG, blood pressure, comfort level, lead malfunctions).
- Analyzes test results; identifying abnormal/unexpected values and alerts physician and Nurse Practitioner as appropriate.
- Prepares, organizes, processes and documents test results.
Cardiac Device Assessment and Programming - Performs sensing and capture threshold tests in atrium or ventricle(s).
- Analyzes diagnostics and real time (electrograms) telemetry.
- Responsible to verifies appropriate pacemaker/Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)/Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) function for inpatients and preoperatively.
- Manages pacing systems that are subject to alerts, advisories and recalls according to the Heart Rhythms Society (HRS).
- Maintains, calibrates and troubleshoots diagnostic pacemaker equipment (e.g., resolves pacemaker/ICD issues).
- Documents final setting and records information in patient record
Quality Assurance / Quality Control - Participates in Quality Assurance/Quality Control programs as required
- Cleans, maintains and troubleshoots equipment according to established Infection Control policies and procedures.
Patient Education / Research / Teaching - Provides pre-operative teaching for pacemaker patients.
- Provides verbal and written information regarding post-operative care (e.g., signs and symptoms associated with pacemaker/ICD malfunction).
- Assures patients have an appropriate post-discharge follow-up.
- Instructs and supervises “hands on” programming for new hires and other learners as required.
- Provides on-going education regarding function of pacemakers to other health care professionals (e.g., RN’s, NPs, medical students, interns), as required.
- Assists with research protocols, statistics and outcome management.
Other Responsibilities - Ensures "crash cart" is stocked appropriately.
- Performs computer work (e.g., data entry, back-up).
- Provides reception/clerical duties (e.g., telephone, faxing, photocopying, booking appointments).
- Prepares, communicates and files test results and reports.
- Prepares statistical reports.
- Maintains inventory.
- Disposes of biohazardous waste, as per hospital procedures and policies.
Education: - Registered member of the Canadian Society of Cardiology Technologists (CSCT); Graduate of Applied Health Sciences program – Cardiovascular Technology Diploma
- Successful, or demonstrated commitment towards, completion of the Certification Examination for Competency in Cardiac Rhythm Device Therapy for Allied Health Professionals
- Recent BLS
Qualifications/Experience: - Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in the areas of Heart Rhythm/Pacemaker and Device Clinic with the ability to display advanced clinical assessment and analytical skills
- Functional knowledge of computer technology and able to adapt readily to rapid changes in new technologies
- Strong background in cardiovascular physiology and rhythm interpretation.
- Commitment to continuing education to ensure maintenance of competencies and current best practice in device management
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Must have a level of physical fitness to perform the essential duties of the position which include standing for long periods and wearing lead aprons
- Demonstrates the values of TEHN
