The Research Technologist will employ cultured human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from amyotropic lateral sclerosis patients and neurons derived from these iPSCs to studying underlying mechanisms of neurodegenerative disease. They will be expected to become proficient in the novel and modern methods of iPSC derivation differentiation as well as methodology for evaluating iPSN phenotypes. The individual will then be expected to work independently and manage daily research projects. The Research Technologist will participate in planning and conducting experiments as well as evaluating/interpreting test results utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices. The individual should be capable of independent judgment in the selection, development, performance and evaluation of research methods and operation of appropriate equipment.
The Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which include: iPSC culture (passaging, cryopreservation, and differentiation) and molecular, biochemical, and imaging techniques to evaluate iPSN phenotypes.
Prepares solutions and reagents following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
Assembles, manipulates and/or formats data and/or test reports. Maintains excellent written records and electronic databases.
Participates in the organization and operation of the laboratory. Performs general lab maintenance duties. Orders and manages laboratory supplies and reagents as required. Monitors inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures. Keeps current knowledge of vendors and suppliers of materials specific to the laboratory requirements.
Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens. Completes annual university biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety training, as appropriate. Monitors biohazard/radiation safety standards and proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace.
Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):
Bachelor's degree, in biology, chemistry or related field.
Some related post-undergraduate work experience.
Background in tissue culture and microscopy, particularly iPSC culture.
Experience with aseptic cell culture.
Experience with preparation of standard laboratory buffers and other chemicals needed for cell culture.
Basic understanding and/or previous experience with light microscopy and immunofluorecence.
Knowledge of various software applications such as Excel spreadsheets, electronic mail, World Wide Web, statistical packages, and graphics packages.
