CO Genetic Counselor

The Institute of Genetic Medicine is seeking a Board Certified/Board Eligible Genetic Counselor to work within the Pediatric/Adult Genetics Clinics in the Department of Genetic Medicine (DGM), Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  The DGM Clinical team includes 12 clinical faculty, 3 midlevel providers (PA, Sr. Nurse, Sr. Nutritionist), 8 clinical Genetic Counselors, 1 Genetic Counselor Assistant, and an office support team of Medical Office Coordinators and Financial Clearance experts.  Genetic Counselors in the clinic see both pediatric and adult patients in the Johns Hopkins Hospital in both outpatient and inpatient settings. 

The DGM provides Genetic Counseling services across multiple clinical departments including Neurology and Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, and Ophthalmology in addition to our General Genetics clinic and several Genetics specialty clinics. The JHU School of Medicine has a Genetic Counselor Career Ladder in place to support the promotion of Genetic Counselors based on their experience and expertise, and this ladder provides a clear pathway for professional progression, academic research time, and opportunities to build programs in genetic medicine.  Incoming Genetic Counselors are evaluated against the ladder to appropriately slot them into their current tier; tiers range from GC1 through GC4.  The DGM is seeking Genetic Counselors from all clinical backgrounds including new graduates to apply for this posted position.  All levels of experience will be considered.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

• Reviews medical records to determine possible genetic testing options and, for the general genetics clinic, to determine the appropriate geneticist to see the patient.
• Captures accurate and detailed documentation of clinical encounters to document clinical care in accordance with Medicare and State requirements for service.
• Assists in the development/implementation of patient/family care plan.
• Coordinates clinical genetic testing that may be available for patients including informed consent, lab requisition forms, and letters of medical necessity.
• Communicates and documents test results to physicians and patients.
• Provides on‐call support for inpatients within the hospital.
• Fields and responds to inquiries related to genetic testing/counseling services from health care professionals, patients, and the public.
• Aides the scheduling process by triaging patients to the proper physicians.
• Collaborates with genetic residents.
• Attends and participates in educational activities.
• Attends and actively participates in weekly case conferences, clinic, department, and other JHU meetings as assigned.
• Seeks to apply learning from training and job assignments and accepts constructive criticism in order to improve performance.
• Develops and maintains positive working relationships with team members.
• Presents oneself with self‐assurance and maintain a positive image.
•  Ensures the maintenance of patient confidentiality.
• Performs miscellaneous related duties and special projects as assigned.

Department Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide independent, direct genetic counseling.
• Assist in the management of the general genetics clinic.
• Communicate test results to physicians and patients, often as a follow-up face to face visit.
• Work effectively within a health care team.
• Respond to inquiries related to genetic testing/counseling services from health care professionals, patients, and the public.
• Participate in DGM educational activities, which can include giving lectures to current and future health care professionals and supervising genetic counseling students and residents.

Minimum Qualification:

Master’s degree from a graduate program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. Must seek certification as a genetic counselor from the ABGC within one year of hire date. Must maintain certification by completion of the required CEUs for the period prescribed by the Board. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Successful completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

Preferred Qualifications:

•   1 year genetic counseling experience.
•   Experience in general pediatric or adult genetics clinic.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:

•   ABGC Board eligibility. 
•   Certification required within one year of employment.
•   ABGC Board Certification preferred at time of hire.
•   Obtain state licensure (where appropriate) to practice Genetic Counseling.

Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

•   Strong written and verbal communications skills.
•   Strong computer skills demonstrating proficiency with electronic medical records. 
•   Ability to read and analyze lab results.

Physical Requirements: 

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.  Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s).  Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
