The Department of Urology currently has an outstanding opportunity for a RESEARCH SCIENTIST ENGINEER 1.

The employee occupying this position will perform investigative research work in the Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) Animal Facility working with and caring for unique prostate cancer patient-derived xenografts growing in immuno-compromised mice, in the Genitourinary Cancer Research Laboratory in the Department of Urology.

This position will perform routine scientific work, evaluating, selecting and applying standardized scientific procedures and techniques to assignments with clear, specific objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Animal Surgery Support:
  • Using accepted methods and techniques, solves well-defined problems and performs specific and limited portions of broader projects, under technical guidance of the Animal Facility Director.
  • Delivery and monitoring of anesthesia, including post-surgery recovery.
  • Aseptic handling and restraint of immuno-compromised mice in biosafety cabinets.
  • Microsurgery and routine surgical procedures, such as orchiectomy of mice.
  • Tumor implantation and serial transplantation are critically important aspects of the position.
  • Proficient in tail vein injections, oral gavage, and retro-orbital bleeds.
  • Proficient in dose calculations, formulations and dilutions.
  • Collection and processing of tissue and blood.
  • Help develop new surgical techniques to accomplish research goals.
  • Maintenance and cleaning of surgical instruments and equipment.

    Collection and Documentation of Data:
  • Successful performance of project related tasks provides support to on-going efforts and provides preliminary data for grant applications.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in data collection (e.g. using calipers for determining tumor size).
  • Helps maintain Facility Documentation and Notebooks.

    In the SPF Animal Facility:
  • Interacts in a collaborative manner with other team members to accomplish organizational goals; provide ideas for improved efficiency.  Defines and improves practices from experiences on small projects.
  • Aseptic handling and restraint of immuno-compromised mice in biosafety cabinets.
  • Animal care and husbandry.
  • Facility maintenance and quality assurance (includes some janitorial duties).

    Participation in our Tumor Acquisition Protocols:
  • Rotate as a member of an on-call Tumor Acquisition Necropsy (TAN) Team (every three weeks).
  • During a TAN, fulfill the duties of the Animal Facility by helping collect, process and implant tumor tissue into immune compromised mice.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

    Minimum Requirements:
  • A B.S. in Biology, Zoology, Animal Science or related field, or equivalent experience, plus at least one year of experience working in a research laboratory, with knowledge of aseptic technique, blood draws, injections, necropsies, mouse handling and husbandry (must be able to lift 50 lbs).  Experience in histology and / or immunohistochemistry is required.
  • Must be willing to work with radioactive materials and biohazards, including, but not limited to, human and animal tissues and their bodily fluids.  The candidate will be required to participate in the Occupational Health Program.  The candidate will be required to attend, participate, and pass (where required) the University of Washington’s training courses in Bloodborne Pathogens,  Radiation Protection, General Animal Use, Mouse Techniques, and additional courses as required for successful completion of job duties.

    Desired:
  • Five years’ experience working in a murine animal facility with knowledge of aseptic technique, blood draws, injections, necropsies, mouse handling and husbandry
  • Experience working in a urology laboratory or a cancer research laboratory.

    Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be able to work under limited supervision to complete assigned tasks/projects demonstrating an ability to work independently.
  • Attention to detail and a positive team work attitude are critical requirements.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required

    Shift Information: MONDAY-FRIDAY 8 hours per day during the period of 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.

    Disqualifications:  Allergies to rodents.
