CO Nurse Practitioner

The Nurse Practitioner in the Brady Urological Institute and Department of Urology is intended to collaborate with the faculty physician to provide Hopkins-quality continuum of care to patients with Urologic diseases. Patients in the practice are drawn from local, national and international locales and often require coordination of multidisciplinary care. The nurse practitioner (NP) is an independent health care provider working cooperatively within a multi-disciplinary health team and is responsible for providing comprehensive care to patients.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include interviewing patients, taking medical histories, performing physical examinations, ordering laboratory tests, making tentative diagnosis, and prescribing appropriate treatments. Educates patients and or their families in order to promote wellness, prevent health problems, maintain current health and intervene in acute or chronic illness. Prescribe and regulate medications per provider-Physician institutional agreements. Record and document health assessment data necessary to maintain, coordinate and/ or expedite required services.
Ensure patient and physician calls are returned in a timely manner and all patient interactions (phone, conversations, visits, etc.) are documented appropriately in EPR. Function as liaison between the urology team and primary care providers, nurse case managers, inpatient personnel and health care professionals in other specialties. Triage phone calls, answer questions from patients including instructions, medications, refills, biopsies, test results and other aspects of clinical care. Call patients with results according to protocol. Acts in the role of mentors and/or consultant to nurses, physicians, students, and other health care professionals.
Assume responsibility for own professional development and remains current in clinical practice by attending relevant continuing education, manage-operate independent clinic, provide intervention as needed and triage complex cases appropriately. Coordinate scheduling of complicated patient treatment.
Assume responsibility and accountability for time management professional relationships and interpersonal interactions. Regularly attend all outpatient clinics. Assist physician with patient management in the clinic. Manage/operate independent clinics. Assess and/ or manages follow- up plans specific to the patient’s needs. Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.
JHU Equivalency: Additional experience may substitute for master's degree.
Preferred Qualifications: Graduate of accredited Master’s program for school of nursing with a Nurse Practitioner curriculum of adult medicine.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Physical Requirements: Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
