Position summary: Provides law enforcement and security services that promote a safe and secure campus environment for students, faculty, staff, visitors, facilities, and for the protection of College property.
General purpose: Patrols campus buildings, grounds and neighboring communities on foot or other forms of transportation, act as shift supervisor, provide on the job training to assist subordinates in development of administrative and technical skills and performs related administrative duties as required.
Patrols buildings, grounds and adjacent areas on foot or in patrol car; guards against trespass, theft or damage to property; conducts surveillance of high crime areas
Investigates all crimes and missing goods or persons, complaints, accidents and suspicious activities/persons/vehicles; and inspects buildings, grounds, fire lanes and emergency exits for health/safety compliance
Supervise or gathers evidence in preparation for court use and may appear in court as witness
Completes clearÂ and concise reports, and assists, reviews and approves written reports submitted by Security Guard staff
Operates motor vehicle, occasionally at high speed for pursuit or emergency response
Read, interpret, and explain procedures, guidelines, policies, legal documents, maps, charts, building plans that govern assigned department activities
Apply knowledge of crime prevention, patrol, crime suppression deployment, interviewing, gathering evidence and criminal investigations techniques
Supervise specifically assigned shift
Oversee subordinate work for proper performance in conformance with state and campus laws, rules, regulations, instructions, and proceduresÂ
Perform superior administrative skills in organizing, delegating and directing the work of others
Author clear, concise and complete directives, reports, proposals and work plans
Effectively evaluate subordinate performance, train personnel, discipline and provide guidance and counseling when needed
Enhance moral and instill esprit de corps
Takes command of Campus Safety/Police Department in times of emergency until the arrival of a superior officer
Perform other related duties as assigned
High school diploma or equivalent
Demonstrated years of experience in law enforcement or campus security with a minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience
Graduate of a 8 week or longer Police or Corrections training academy or similar program
CPR Certification in CPR and First Aid, including Basic Life Support or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
Ability to pass entrance level physical agility and annual physical fitness test
Must be proficient and technically skilled while performing all the duty requirements of each subordinate under their command
Experience using equipment used in public safety work, including emergency medical certification, and uses of basic protective firefighting equipment
Knowledge of the terminology, codes and standard abbreviations used in security/police work
Knowledge of methods and operating procedures for foot/vehicle (bike, Segway, car) patrols
General knowledge of criminal law and procedures
Associates Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field
Ability to obtain Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act (LEOSA) certification
Knowledge of campus security practices
Possess or ability to obtain First Responder Certification
Reporting to this position: 10 IPO, 4 ISO, 25 Security Guards and student workers
Conditions of Employment:
Candidate must successfully complete a full background check
Must have the ability to be appointed as licensed Special Police Officer under Maryland Laws
Successfully complete a medical and drug screening examination IAW HR/CJTC police standards
Licensed and required to carry a personally owned and approved firearm while on duty at all time
Ability to maintain an annual Firearms Qualification
Candidate must maintain a current valid drivers' license with satisfactory driving recordÂ
Required to work shifts, weekends and holidays
This position is an âessential personnel,â meaning the attendance for 24-hour emergency response availability, and presence for campus emergencies is mandatory
