The Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) seeks an experienced and dynamic student services leader to strategically integrate academic and professional support services into the student experience. Each year, AAP enrolls almost 5,000 graduate part-time and professional students in more than 40 distinctive professional graduate degrees, post-baccalaureate certificates, and non-credit courses in two geographic locations (Washington, D.C., and Baltimore) and online. Over 77% of AAP's enrollments are in the online programs.
Reporting to the Associate Dean for Graduate and Professional Programs, the Director of Student Success and Advancement provides vision and strategic oversight for the rebranded Office of Student Success and Advancement and serves on the AAP Senior Leadership Team.
The mission of the Office of Student Success and Advancement is to create an integrated support system that facilitates both academic achievement and career success for each AAP student. The Office will be a hub connecting students to opportunities, individuals, and tools to support their success.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
The Director will manage a team of dedicated student support professionals in two areas: academic success and professional success.
In the area of academic success, the Director provides oversight for retention and persistence efforts related to advising and student support including but not limited to: orientation and ongoing community programming, student mental health support, academic advising, crisis management, disability support services, and tutoring. In area of professional success, the Director will provide oversight for life design programming and resources, opportunities for students to connect with employers and alumni, and post-graduate outcomes. In both areas, the Director will ensure alignment with the mission and vision of the Associate Dean, the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, and the Office of the Provost, specifically: Vice Provost for Student Affairs, Vice Provost for Student Health and Wellbeing, and Vice Provost for Integrative Learning and Life Design.
The Director oversees policies, procedures and systems related to conduct, academic advising, student support services, career development, employer engagement and alumni engagement. The Director is responsible for ensuring AAP's compliance with appropriate federal laws in these areas, including FERPA, Americans with Disabilities Act, and Title IX.
The Director manages the non-academic student conduct process for AAP students in conjunction with the University Student Conduct Code. The Director serves as Academic Integrity Officer for academic conduct issues within AAP and manages the adjudication process in accordance with the Graduate Academic Misconduct Code. A crucial part of the conduct process – both academic and behavioral – includes the ongoing training and support of faculty and staff in these policies and procedures.
The Director reviews appeals from students regarding AAP and University policy and adjudicates, consulting the Associate Dean as needed.
In collaboration with the Vice Provost for Student Affairs, Risk Management, and General Counsel, the Director will develop and implement crisis response protocols for student-related emergencies. The Director position serves as the senior administrator on-call for AAP for student-related emergencies.
Master's degree in education or specific field related to program.
5 years of experience in all aspects of academic program administration.
Supervisory experience preferred.
Master's degree or Terminal degree in education, preferably in higher education or student affairs
7-10 years of experience working experience in all aspects of academic program administration, preferably in student services, with experience in academic advising, career development.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Experience with non-traditional learners in professional graduate programs
Experience developing and managing a system of support for student services
Experience developing policy, preferably in higher education settings
Experience building relationships within and navigating a large, complex decentralized organization
Understanding of federal laws related to higher education, including but not limited to FERPA, ADA, Title IX
Conflict management, particularly in an educational setting
Understanding of career development theory and best practice relevant to career readiness and employer engagement
Crisis response experience
Understanding of academic advising and student development theoretical frameworks
Superb relationship-building skills
Supervisory responsibility: 4-6 staff positions
