The Department of Environment Health and Engineering is seeking a Research Specialist to participate in laboratory research via using a number of cell lines (e.g., cancer cell lines and stem cell lines) for maintenance, culture, and further functional studies (e.g., knocking down). In addition, prepare and design experiments for toxicant/drug treatments.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Participate in laboratory research via using a number of cell lines (e.g., cancer cell lines and stem cell lines) for maintenance, culture, and further functional studies (e.g., knocking down). In addition, prepare and design experiments for toxicant/drug treatments.
Use a variety of laboratory tools, such as cell manipulations, cell inoculation to produce animal models and/or treatment with chemical toxicants and/or drugs for disease models, as well as subsequent laboratory and phenotypic characterizations.
Use molecular genetic tools, including (but not limited to) Western blotting, PCR, RT-qPCR, and regular Sanger sequencing, as well as next generation sequencing techniques (RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, etc.) for mechanistic insights.
Organize, analyze and summarize the research data to prepare laboratory and scientific meeting reports on the topics assigned/worked
Help train and supervise junior postdoctoral fellows and students with the above skills and expertise for molecular and epigenetic studies
Coordinates, organize and arrange regular scientific meetings for the team members as needed; prepares agendas, material for, and coordination of meetings with researchers on the research programs in the lab.
Train junior members (new fellows/students/visiting scholars) in the lab and performs quality assurance reviews for the scientific data, as well as participate in the discussion of ideas for new research projects.
Operate basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, scintillation counter, light and/or fluorescence microscope, microplate reader, plate washer and biological safety cabinet.
Responsible for operation of lab computers for data entry.
Maintains detailed working knowledge of protocols
Designs spreadsheets and databases for tracking and management of research data
Data entry and management using database and other computer software
Ordering of lab supplies through the complex Johns Hopkins SAP system.
Any other responsibilities needed by the lab but not specified here.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field. One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques. Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum experience required for the respective job

Physical Requirements: Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or laboratory environment.
