Essential Job Duties:
The Laboratory Manager manages and supervises all activities necessary to operate the ME Senior Design Laboratory.
The position of Laboratory supervisor will plan, develop, execute and maintain the daily operations of the ME Department's Senior Design Laboratory. The range of duties includes, but is not limited to: project planning, laboratory management, and training and instruction; and the operation & knowledge of precision machine tools and equipment.
This position must demonstrate and model effective mental concentration, visual attention, and manipulative skills.
This position must maintain a high level of knowledge needed for the senior design laboratory, develop plans to accomplish work operations, monitor expenses, observe and assess work, provide feedback to faculty, staff and students and provide technical oversight in the senior design laboratory.
Work will include the training and supervision of students and professional staff and also communicating extensively with faculty on research objectives and senior design needs. Work requires knowledge of manufacturing concepts, practices and procedures, laboratory operations, regulatory requirements, and planning. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and required knowledge of calipers, micrometers, and laser scanning arm. Some flexible work hours, including evenings, may be required with this position and other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
The ME senior design laboratory supervisor provides oversight and supervision in the design, construction, and operation of devices in support of the ME Senior Design research projects and training of mechanical engineering students and also the ME sophomore-level design course.
This position requires knowledge of operation and responsibility for shop equipment (Water Jet, Lathes, 3D printers, laser cutters, milling machines, saws, etc.), the maintenance of a safe shop environment, and student and faculty support. This position works very closely with the MAE research fabrication shop and its personnel.
Serves as building liaison for Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Department in EBIII and the West Annex complex.
As building liaison, serves as the contact person between the department and facilities in all matters of building concerns for the MAE Department. This includes ensuring that building residents are aware of power and water outages. Also responsible for department/building needs as needed. Works with the fire marshals to meet fire equipment code in labs and offices. Enter work orders and facility modification requests. Coordination and management of department’s lab and office moving as needed. Also works with EHS for lab safety as needed.
Bachelor’s degree and two years of general research experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Experienced in operating, demonstrating and training of specialized devices such as milling machines, lathes, grinders, water jet, and 3D Printers.
Knowledge in Auto-car or Solid Works for the water jet and 3D-Printers.
At least 2 years of experience working in an academic environment is preferred, but not required.
