The Johns Hopkins University (JHU), one of the world's premier research universities, invites applications for the Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships in the Office of Student Financial Services, located on the Homewood Campus. Reporting to the assistant vice provost for Financial Aid, the Director leads a team of 17 financial aid professionals that oversees the application, awarding and delivery of more than $300 million dollars in federal, state, private and institutional funds. Located on the 140-acre North Baltimore campus, Homewood serves over 5,000 undergraduate and 7,000 graduate students enrolled in the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and Whiting School of Engineering. S/he will be an experienced financial aid professional familiar with current trends and challenges in financial aid, who understands the principles of need-based aid and Institutional Methodology (IM), and who thrives in fast paced environments where expectations for performance and productivity are high. The Director works collaboratively with a broad group of campus partners, including Admissions, Student Billing, Registration, Advising, Student Life and IT to enhance the Johns Hopkins student experience.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Work closely with the Assistant Vice Provost for Financial Aid to develop strategies to enhance JHU's financial aid program in support of bringing the most talented, creative and ambitious undergraduate students to the Hopkins Community, regardless of their family's financial circumstances
Direct office operations and develop strategies to manage multiple work streams, ensuring that they are conducted within existing policy, procedural and compliance guidelines; that best practices are followed, and technology and automation are leveraged at every opportunity
Work with Undergraduate and Graduate Admissions on messaging and recruitment strategies to communicate affordability and procedures to apply for need based aid
Develop the office structure necessary to manage undergraduate and graduate work streams optimally, including a robust graduate distance education population
Foster a data-driven and analytical office environment where key performance indicators are integrated into all aspects of process, staff evaluations, resource decisions, and goal setting
Help the team navigate complex financial aid issues by fostering a culture that encourages written policies, procedures and business guides, as well as edit checks, standards, and quality assurance reviews to ensure the accuracy and consistency of work
Lead, mentor, and provide opportunities for professional growth to a team of 17 full-time employees (4 direct reports): Sr. Associate Director (2) Associate Director (2) Financial Aid Advisers (10) Client Services Specialists (2) & the equivalent of 1 FTE of dedicated IT support from JHU's central University Information Services
Foster an open, welcoming and inclusive environment for students and staff
Set office and individual performance goals; make salary and promotion recommendations for office personnel
Represent the University at regional and national professional meetings and on committees in professional organizations
Oversee the creation of annual reports, including peer analyses, NCAA, Common Data Set and FISAP.
Ensure that all operational processes are aligned with Title IV compliance policies and that staff review and resolve Title IV compliance exception reports
Manage the office's operational budget, as well as a $150+ million need-based aid budget for undergraduates
Bachelors required, Masters Degree preferred
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Strong problem-solving skills
Strong understanding of the principles of need-based aid and Institutional Methodology Use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and Power Point) is required
Experience with PowerFAIDS Preferred
Knowledge of workflow and document imaging solutions (OnBase preferred)
7-10 years recent direct experience within a Financial Aid Office, including high level leadership, supervisory and systems responsibilities.
