The Industrial Hygiene/Environmental Health and Safety Specialist interprets, develops, implements and maintains applicable industrial hygiene and environmental health and safety standards, systems and processes with a focus on noise, respiratory protection, hazard communication, confined space, asbestos, lead and exposure assessments. Provides industrial hygiene and EHS guidance, consultation and training to the Northwestern University community. This position will support Northwestern’s Chicago and Evanston campuses.
Integrates regulatory requirements and best practices with results from safety inspections, observations and exposure assessments into programmatic actions.
Maintain safety and health recordkeeping systems such as safety inspections/observations and exposure monitoring records.
Advises the Northwestern University community regarding industrial hygiene protocols and procedures regulatory compliance; partners with departments, faculty and staff to correct non-compliance issues, including follow-up corrective actions.
Develops an exposure monitoring plan and all required exposure monitoring.
Develops and implements industrial hygiene/environmental health and safety programs and procedures in assigned area of specialization such as respiratory protection, occupational noise, indoor air quality, asbestos and lead, local exhaust ventilation.
Utilizes a variety of industrial hygiene monitoring, sampling and analytical equipment and instruments to evaluate chemical and noise exposures, maintains detailed records of sampling activities.
Develop and train faculty, staff and students in various environmental, health and safety programs including hazard communication, respiratory protection, and asbestos.
Partners with Facilities to review project plans, including new and remodeling projects for compliance with local, state and federal regulations.
Responds, investigates and documents incidents and emergencies and facilitates necessary follow-up and action items.
Keeping up to date on current and emerging local, state and federal environmental, health and safety requirements and ensuring Northwestern University is compliant.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
3 years of relevant work experience in the industrial hygiene, safety profession, or one of its specialties.
Knowledge of OSHA, ANSI and ACGIH standards
Knowledge of asbestos and lead management programs
Knowledge of ventilation systems
Maintained recordkeeping systems.
Experience developing and conducting training in various EHS topics
Experience conducting exposure assessments
Experience recognizing hazards
Participated in and lead emergency response
Experience addressing employee environmental health and safety concerns
Implemented environmental health and safety programs and measures
Prepared technical reports
Performed environmental and industrial hygiene surveys, including sampling and monitoring
Ability to operate various industrial hygiene monitoring equipment
