About Metro Waste Authority
Thanks to the vision of many metro communities, and the county, Metro Waste Authority celebrated 50 years of service in 2019.
Until 1969, trash was self-hauled to a dump site that did not protect the soil or ground water and was a neighborhood eyesore. The communities and county formed Des Moines Solid Waste Agency, known today as Metro Waste Authority, in response to new environmental regulations related to managing solid waste. Today, we offer services that make our communities healthier, safer, and better places to live now.
Metro Waste Authority still operates the largest landfill in Iowa, but the agency now provides nearly all safe, smart recycling and disposal services for the region. We manage curbside programs for garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection; provide safe hazardous waste disposal; and most recently, developed a construction and demolition recycling program. In 2021 Metro Waste Authority will open the doors to our own Materials Recovery Facility with the goal of making the same positive impact on recycling as we’ve done for garbage the last 50 years.
Our commitment to the environment extends much further than responsible waste disposal. We facilita...te conversations regarding local challenges and legislative priorities. We devote land and resources to host wetland sites and butterfly habitats to aid in climate stabilization. We also partner with schools, providing unique hands-on education in the classroom, and at our outdoor learning lab, the Environmental Learning Center. These programs, and more, have earned Metro Waste Authority regional and national recognition for innovation and environmental stewardship.
Metro Waste Authority and its Board of Directors are dedicated to the long-term health and well-being of the Metro. The agency has made a significant impact on the health and vitality of central Iowa for 50 years. We have supported the growth of the region for five decades and this devotion will only extend far into the future.
