Purpose of Position: The Instructional Designer will provide vision, leadership, and coordination in designing, developing, and delivering fully online courses and technology-enhanced instructional materials for graduate programs delivered by AAP. The Instructional Designer will maintain AAP standards of excellence in course development and delivery, and act as a project lead in various assigned special projects necessary for the maintenance and development of online courses.
Knowledge and Skills: Instructional Design
Must be service oriented, self-motivated, organized, and a detail-oriented team player who is capable of participating in collaborative instructional development processes and activities.
In-depth understanding of learning theories and instructional design models
In-depth knowledge of multimedia (audio, graphics, and video)
In-depth Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to apply Instructional Design models/principles (Backward Design, ADDIE; etc.) to an online environment
Knowledge of various course assessment techniques and methods.
Knowledge of cognitive theories of learning and motivation theories, (e.g. ARCS)
Ability to solve problems in enterprising and proactive ways
Ability to conduct quality reviews of existing online courses using Quality Matters rubric or other assessment tool
In-depth understanding of Section 508, UDL and applicable accessibility standards relating to online courses
Familiarity with copyright laws and creative commons
Experience with web-based course management tools (such as Blackboard) and online conferencing software (such as Zoom)
In-depth knowledge of course authoring tools (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, etc.
Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, basic HTML editing software, and basic image manipulation software (Photoshop).
Experience on Mac and PC platforms.
Knowledge of current and emerging instructional technologies
Demonstrated ability to train one-on-one and in a group setting in a collaborative and professional way using multiple modalities

Bachelor’s degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, or related field
Three years of progressively responsible experience in course design and development, faculty training, or program/course assessment/evaluation required.
Advanced degree may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or other related discipline is preferred.
Minimum 5-years of professional experience in an academic or corporate environment, designing and developing distance or online instruction.
Thorough knowledge of online instructional design, pedagogy/andragogy, emerging technology, and distance learning best practices desirable.
Demonstrated use of Quality Matters™ rubric or similar course design quality standards.
Experience working with both Mac and PC platforms.
Minimum 2-years of experience using course authoring tools like Adobe Captive or Articulate Storyline.
Minimum 2-years of experience developing interactive training materials and learning objects.
Two to three years of online teaching experience at the higher education level
Experience and certification in professional course evaluation (Quality Matters)
Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:
Demonstrated experience working with streaming audio and video, compression methods, file types and formats, and related software and platforms (i.e., Panopto, Camtasia Studio, Kaltura, etc.).
Proven ability to continually adapt and learn new procedures, systems, and software applications.
Ability to communicate and collaborate using a variety of synchronous meeting tools (i.e., Zoom, Adobe Connect, Google Hangouts, Skype, etc.).
Demonstrated experience with learning management systems, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and course authoring tools (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, etc.).
Internal and External Contacts:
Collaborate with JHU Instructional Design group to share best practices throughout the Hopkins community.
Communicate with IT@JHU to document issues with our CMS and other instructional technologies.
Collaborate with the Center for Educational Resources (CER) on various training and instructional design projects.
Collaborate with Library Services on student orientation, copyright, reserves and student support systems.
Attend CMS Support meetings to exchange issues and best practices on current JHU online learning and technology processes.
Work with assigned external vendors as necessary to maintain functionality of current systems:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities with Measures
70% of Time Spent - Instructional Design
Lead the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of complex courses, ensuring competency alignment among courses to achieve program objectives.
Consult with faculty to identify and integrate the appropriate instructional design and technologies needed to employ evidence-based instructional practices to enhance the learning process.
Collaborate and consult with faculty on the effective use of Web-based resources, multimedia technologies, and instructional strategies to develop or revise their courses
Provide recommendations for interface design, sequencing of instruction, active learning, and use of assessments activities.
Coordinate the development of instructional materials that are functional, informative, engaging, and consistent with sound instructional design principles, including alignment of course objectives with learning activities, instructional resources, and assessments.
Create supporting material/media (simulations, role plays, games, case studies, etc.)
Utilize multimedia technology and authoring tools to develop interactive and engaging instructional resources including video, audio podcasts, and graphics
Research and evaluate new and emerging technologies, instructional design theories, and approaches and policies for potential application to instructional design.
Manage project timelines and coordinate with team members and partners to meet project deliverables
Collaborate with multimedia team to develop media products for use in online courses including presentations, video, audio podcasts, and graphics
Monitor and stay abreast of new and emerging technologies
Study and evaluate instructional design theories for application to a variety of program and department needs
Read and stay abreast of JHU and peer institutional best practices and evaluate them for potential application in instructional design at AAP
Document development and revision process – meetings held, resources shared, guidance provided, suggestions for future improvements noted, etc.
Ensure that new development/revisions meet IRC/AAP and program standards

Plan, develop and implements workshops and other activities that will promote teaching, learning, and assessment in areas related to learning strategies, instructional strategies and technology, and student learning outcomes.
Conduct individual training and coaching for faculty to meet instructional design and development learning opportunities and needs.
5% of Time Spent - Special Project Lead
In coordination with accommodation requests (ADA and Section 508), proactively finds solutions to course deficiencies, makes strategic recommendations, and implements any changes necessary to assist faculty members
Represents the IRC at JHU technology meetings and functions
Develop and analyze data to provide regular reports on courses, faculty, and student needs
Assist with course readiness during peak times at semester start-up
