The Research Program Assistant II will work as part of a collaborative research team on studies focused on youth development and mentoring in Baltimore, Maryland. Primary responsibilities include conducting qualitative interviews with adults and African-American youth ages 11-14, ensuring all ethical research protocols, engaging with local organizations to aid study recruitment, and discussing interview findings with the study team. The ideal candidate has previous experience working with African-American youth in Baltimore, maintains a high level of responsibility and independence, has experience in qualitative data collection, and is knowledgeable about the topics of mentoring and drug use.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Conduct qualitative interviews with adults and African American youth ages 11-14. Interviews will focus on topics of mentoring, substance use, and related health and social issues.
Conduct appropriate informed consent procedures.
Maintain compliance with IRB regulations and guidelines.
Document interview summaries, observations, and reflections using a structured form.
Actively communicate/update supervising study team on data collection and participant recruitment status.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Required)
High School Diploma/GED.
Two (2) years related experience.
Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *
Bachelor’s degree, experience obtaining informed consent among vulnerable and diverse populations, conducting in-depth interviews and the ability to understand and apply specified research protocols.
Two years related experience, prior qualitative research training or experience or similar, strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a timely fashion required.
Interest in and desire to address issues that affect young people in Baltimore City.
Knowledgeable of youth development, the context of poverty and substance use among youth in Baltimore, familiarity with mentoring programs and other programs working with youth. Baltimore City resident preferred. Prior experience working with young people in any context.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to interact sensitively, effectively, and professionally with individuals from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds.
Familiarity with issues of poverty, substance use, and other health inequities youth living in Baltimore may experience preferred.
Prior work experience administering research interviews. Prior work experience with youth and/or mentoring organizations.
Knowledge of qualitative methods highly desirable; must be sensitive to the nature of the work and confidentiality of the study participants.
Ability to travel to interview locations in the Baltimore area as needed.
