The Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a Sr. Nurse Practitioner to work directly with Neurosurgeon directly in a specialty area responsible for performing many patient-oriented tasks such as interviewing patients, taking medical histories, performing physical examinations, ordering laboratory tests, coordinating the continuum of care, providing education to patients and significant others, conducting clinic sessions, and prescribing appropriate treatments.
Working with the attending, performs the functions of an advance practitioner to coordinate the care of patients and facilitate efficient and effective movement through the health care system.
The Sr. Nurse Practitioner develops, trains (to include onboarding of new staff), and manages assigned staff which includes Full time and PRN Advanced Practitoners. In addition, the position would offer support as needed to the JHU PA’s who work on the Hopkins Bayview campus when supporting their particular neurosurgeon.
Participates in decisions concerning employment, promotions and terminations
Completes mid-year and annual performance appraisals.
Conducts interviews to recruit new Physician’s Assistants.
Makes recommendations regarding the development and implementation of procedures / policies affecting personnel.
Assists with credentialing of the physician assistants.
Completes the staffing schedules to include approving time off for the physician assistants to ensure adequate staffing for the clinical areas.
Schedules and coordinates work projects, prioritizes and monitors progress of work through completion. Assists staff in solving work-related problems and mediates discrepancies to a suitable solution.
Interacts with colleges that are seeking to place physician assistants for a clinical rotation.
Handles various inquiries and acts as functional resource. Responds to inquiries regarding operations conducted in assigned area.
Represents the department of neurosurgery at various internal/external meetings for Hopkins Bayview such as the Spine Clinical Community Committee, Spine Committee (to prepare and maintain the spine designation from Joint Commission), Faculty meetings, Trauma meeting and Neurosciences Joint Practice.
Will be involved in work of clinical sub-specialty, involving greater level of managing complex patients through advanced decision making, and greater level of independence in completing assessments and procedures. Screens and interviews patients, takes and records patient histories, and consults with physicians and other health care providers using an interdisciplinary approach to recommend a plan of care. See’s all patients in clinic.
Prescribes medications to patients as indicated. Provides consult services for inpatients and outpatients to determine need for intervention and discusses the results of consult with the attending to determine optimal patient care path. Provides follow up patient care, fields phone calls and correspondence from patients including evening and weekends. Provides counseling and instruction to patients and their significant others regarding health conditions, therapies, and procedures.
May make decisions regarding data gathering and appropriate management and treatment of patients being seen for the initial evaluation of a problem, or the follow-up evaluation of a previously diagnosed and stabilized condition.
Initiates requests for laboratory studies and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Participates in the coordination of research projects including patient enrollment and manages the associated documentation.
Develops policies and procedures as needed to facilitate optimal patient care and functions as a liaison to nursing. Proficient in use of EPR systems. Requires the analytical skills to collect information from diverse sources, apply professional principles in performing various analyses, and summarize the information and data in order to solve problems or design relatively complex systems and programs that cross department/divisional lines.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and provide empathy in difficult interpersonal situations.
Other duties outside of the routine duties as an advanced practitioners include:
Assist the attending in answering HAL calls at all hours, including nights and weekends to transfer patient’s to Johns Hopkins as needed, or discuss cases with other physician’s.
Prepare and present in-service lectures to the floor nurses regarding the care of post operative patient’s at both campuses. Continually review cases and communicate with the Medical Second Opinion office regarding potential patients. See and evaluate patients at both campuses, Johns Hopkins Bayview and Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Independently evaluate patients at their follow up and post operative appointments and determine plan of care and independently bill for these appointments. Review all lab and diagnostic study results as well as new patient referrals that come through the office and determine the appropriate plan of care.
Oversee the medical office coordinator to ensure patients are receiving appropriate referrals and follow up care as well as scheduling of surgery. Manage the office email account by responding to patient questions and concerns 7 days a week.
Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Three (3) years of neurological experience required; in related clinical area, and obtained proficiency in area of specialty. Prefer at least 5 years experience. Residency or fellowship programs in area of specialization may substitute for some experience. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.
Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.
