These two positions are career positions located in Richmond, CA. The position reports to the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH) within the Department of Public Health Sciences. The core activities of the COEH are to educate future leaders in occupational and environmental health, develop new knowledge, and bring the resources of the University of California to people affected by health hazards in their workplaces or communities. The Department of Public Health Sciences is a large comp/ex teaching, research and clinical department in the UC Davis School of Medicine.

Responsibilities Under the supervision of UC Davis, and under the general direction of the Public Health Microbiologist Supervisor, Staff Research Associate 3's role is to respond to the current COVID-19 pandemic. The successful candidate will perform important laboratory testing to detect and identify the virus that causes COVID-19.
Bachelor's degree in chemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, or other biological science and/or equivalent years of experience; training and education.
Minimum of 3 years of microbiology experience that includes knowledge of standard biosafety precautions for working with potential infectious clinical specimens, sterile techniques, and molecular methods (PCR; sequencing)
Demonstrated experience in working with microorganisms, standard precautions, and PCR/sequence analysis
Public Health Microbiologist Certification is preferred, or eligibility for the PHM training program
Experience working at Biosafety Level 2 (BSL 2) is required; BSL3 experience preferred, but not required
Demonstrated skills to perform micromanipulations such as pipetting small volumes and other fine measurements utilizing laboratory
staff and trainees in these duties
Knowledge of lab safety and EH & S requirements
Knowledge of applicable laws, statutes, policies and procedures regarding public health and health information
Thorough knowledge of UCDHS and UCD policies and procedures
Ability to work with desktop computers and general office applications, such as Word, PowerPoint and Excel
Ability to maintain security and confidentiality of data
Ability to contribute as a strong member of a self-directed work team
Ability to develop and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships within diverse groups
Ability to communicate effectively to various levels or technical and non-technical audiences in both written and oral methods
This position involves work in a aboratory with specimens and cultures containing mycobacteria including M. tuberculosis.
The incumbent will be expected to wear personal respiratory protection for part of the work day, and take part in a screening program for TB infection by skin test or blood test.
Valid California Driver's License required or the ability to utilize alternative transportation.
This position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
