Essential Job Duties:
This position supervises approximately 12-14 veterinary technicians/assistants that function in the Randall B Terry Companion Animal Medical Center (TC). The individual ensures that all patients in the patient care areas will receive high quality care by managing, recruiting, hiring and evaluating all direct reports. Effectively plans, directs and manages day to day operations of areas of responsibility. Also functions as a working technician for the departments, providing unique internal customer service, technical support, data collection, and patient care. Position is the primary point of contact for all activities relating to scheduling, patient care, standard operating procedures, and staffing to ensure service area objectives are met and takes corrective action when needed. Position communicates with students, staff and clinicians to receive the most up to date information regarding presenting problem, diagnostics being performed as well as projected plan of care for the animal. Position works with small animal companion animals and exotic patients.
Participates in human resources related responsibilities, including but not limited to; recruitment and selection process; conducts performance management; ensures human resources policies and related information is shared with employees; resolution of disciplinary and grievance issues; monthly time sheets.
Ensures employees have access to tools and information for career development opportunities and delivers and oversees on the job training.
Uses extensive knowledge of veterinary medicine to effectively plan, direct and manage day-to-day operations of areas of responsibility. Plans work operations and priorities daily or weekly to meet hospital objectives.
Proficient in usage of specialized equipment in all aspects relating to hospitalized patient care. Provides post-operative support and monitoring, IV catheter placement for both short and long term vein access, venipuncture, IV injections, wound management, drug administration (IV, Oral, Subcutaneous), bandage care, blood transfusion administration, TPN administration, chemotherapy administration, emergency intervention, ECG monitoring, ventilator set up and monitoring and various other routine diagnostic testing.
Responsible for supervising, coaching, teaching, orienting and evaluating in the principals of Critical Care for all senior veterinary students as well as post-doctoral interns and residents.
Records a variety of data relating to patient care, surgical procedures and preparation, and client communications. Provides quick and accurate information regarding each patient. Is proficient in entering data into electronic medical record.
Maintains a clean working environment to ensure Infectious Disease standards are followed and infection is not spread. Handles all medical/biological and infectious waste appropriately. Follows all radiation safety, OSHA, and Environmental Health and Safety standards.
Keeps all necessary equipment in clean and working order and has all necessary and appropriate stocked supplies available for procedures and daily patient husbandry.
Manages resources, including budget and personnel; establishes priorities in the use of resources including space, equipment and/or facilities.
Evaluates and modifies protocols to ensure excellent patient care and client service. Ensures adherence to procedures and work standards; recommends changes. Responsible for general oversight of units. Financial responsibilities include the continuing education budget, staff salaries, supplies and the fee structure for specialties to insure cost capture, industry equivalence and supply cost.
Works closely with other supervisors and lead technicians to develop standard operating procedures on patient care and promotes an atmosphere of continuous quality improvement.
Rotates through a supervisor/lead technician on call for emergency needs as well as policy and infectious disease questions.
Promotes a positive work environment that fosters communication, trust, problem solving, employee recognition and quality improvement.
Bachelor’s degree and two years of general research experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Experience in a clinical veterinary setting.
Veterinary technician experience in an Critical Care setting.
Previous veterinary supervisory experience.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
Strong planning and organizational skills.
Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations.
One to three years previous supervisory experience.
Graduation from an accredited two or four-year veterinary technician program.
Required license or certification:
Registered or Certified Veterinary Technician.
