The laboratory of Dr. B. Franklin Pugh, Professor of Molecular Biology and Genetics, is seeking a laboratory technician to conduct molecular biology experiments. The Pugh lab has recently moved to Cornell, and is located in a newly built laboratory in the Biotechnology Building. The lab conducts state-of-the-art research in molecular biology and computational biology, with emphasis in eukaryotic gene regulation, transcription, epigenetics, epigenomics, tumor diagnostics, and high-throughput computer-aided analytic workflows. This lab manager position would have the following responsibilities: ensure the smooth and continuous operation of the "wet" bench part of the lab and to coordinate the lab's large-scale DNA sequencing projects by directing novel research in support of grant aims. The lab manager will plan and implement systems supporting specialized scientific experiments as directed by Dr. Pugh, and provide accurate, detailed, and organized results. In addition to technician scheduling, personnel management and hiring, and mentoring full and part-time staff personnel for the lab, the lab manager will: *Design and develop complex experimentation in support of lab research, review progress and evaluate results.
*Conduct state-of the-art research in molecular biology with emphasis in eukaryotic gene regulation, transcription, epigenetics, epigenomics, tumor diagnostics, and high-throughput computer-aided liquid automation systems (robot).
*Set up controls and feedback systems and be responsible for integration with the lab's high-throughput automated computer analysis workflows.
There is also a large component of support to various administrative tasks such as hiring, overseeing purchasing and tracking of consumables within a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and overseeing equipment and warranty maintenance. This position is also responsible for ensuring all the lab personnel are fully trained and compliant with all University Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) policies. This leadership role is expected to promote an environment conducive to learning, collaboration and effective work relationships amongst a diverse group of researchers.
This is a full-time, one year, term appointment with possibility of extension.
Requires a Master's degree (or equivalent combination of education and experience) in a related field of molecular biology. The candidate is expected to have at least 3 years of experience conducting complex experiments, and demonstrate the ability to analyze and interpret results while maintaining scientific rigor, consistency and excellent record keeping. A critical requirement is an ability to project confidence and friendly authority on proper day-to-day lab operations, including over those who may have a higher academic degree or higher seniority. Additional required skills include an ability to work independently, attention to detail, being a team player, and effective communication skills (written and verbal).
Preference is given to those with administrative experience running a medium to large size molecular biology lab and an ability.
