CTY L.I.V.E. is a live, interactive, virtual exploration via a 3-week academic enrichment experience. It is a virtual learning experience that allows students to sample exciting content while fostering some of the connectivity and relationship building that makes the CTY on-site experience so unique. It is different from both Summer and CTY Online programs. It promises to be an important new and permanent option in our portfolio of opportunities for the bright students we serve, including those who wouldn’t choose a Summer Programs or CTY Online Programs course because of cost, travel, or time commitment.
This is an opportunity to participate in an innovative program that provides an academically enriching experience to students in a virtual environment with both synchronous and asynchronous components. Instructors’ primary responsibilities are to plan and conduct their classes (including pedagogical experiences for students outside of the virtual learning classroom) within CTY’s guidelines, and to monitor the progress of each of their students.
The courses will be for students in grades 5-12for one or more of the following courses:
Game of Life: The Theory of Strategic Behavior
How Should We Choose?
Taking a Chance: The Mathematics of Game Shows
The Mathematics of Volatile Markets
There are multiple positions available.

Supervision: Instructors are directly supervised by the CTY program manager.
Instructors are responsible for teaching an appropriately challenging and rigorous course(s) to approximately 10 - 15 highly able students.
Prior to Teaching Your First Class:
Carefully read all training materials. Familiarize yourself with any other program materials provided to you so that you are aware of the overall structure of the program and the rules and regulations for its students and staff. If any conflicts exist, please discuss with your CTY program manager.
Carefully read any materials provided for your course, the teaching website and any additional resources.
Complete any required pre-summer training, including any online training courses
Submit a syllabus by the provided deadline.
Submit a list of required materials for students in your course.
Familiarize yourself with your course text(s) and any other instructional course materials. Contact your program manager if you have questions about structuring your course.
Plan synchronous and asynchronous learning activities for students.
Meet with your CTY program manager if you have questions about structuring your course.
Acclimate yourself to all systems and/or tools used to facilitate virtual instruction including but not limited to Moodle, Zoom, One Drive, etc.
Beginning through End of Virtual Instruction:
Monitor student progress and assist students in accomplishing established learning objectives.
Interact independently with students using distance education technologies, primarily Moodle, Zoom and e-mail.
Provide timely feedback and encouragement to students on coursework and progress.
Manage student behavior and discipline in the online classroom working with the program manager as appropriate.
Communicate with students, IT, and program manager to resolve any course related issues.
Suggest improvements to course design and content. Take steps to educate students about, and to minimize opportunities for, cheating, plagiarism, and other forms of academic dishonesty. On the first day, have students sign the CTY Honor Code or similar document required by the Sponsor’s summer programs and review the CTY Understanding and Avoiding Plagiarism document with them.
Schedule time as necessary for individual conferences and supervised group work with students. (These conferences may take place throughout the day.).
Attend all meetings called by the program manager.
Assign class work according to guidelines discussed in the training materials and meetings.
Return assignments with appropriate comments to the students within one or two days. Monitor student progress, ensure that the amount and type of assignments for your students are appropriately challenging. If students take significantly more or less time to complete their work than you planned, those students’ assignments should be adjusted accordingly.
Keep detailed and accurate records of your students’ performance, including class participation, quiz or test work, skills mastered, insightful questions or comments, and strengths or weaknesses. Keep these records on file for one year so that they may be submitted to the program manager in the event of a question or concern.
Advise the program manager of any disciplinary, emotional, or academic problem a student may be having as soon as you are aware of the problem. Complete and submit program-specific documentation, and handle such issues according to the protocol established.
Assist in ensuring the health and safety of all students by following safety protocols covered in orientation and written materials as requested.
Cooperate with occasional virtual observers of your class (administrators or approved visitors to the program). Every effort will be made to advise you of visitors beforehand and to keep observations from disrupting your sessions.
Abide by CTY’s research policy.
Schedule time for students to complete program and course evaluations and any other questionnaires.
Complete Likert-scale evaluations of your students’ academic performance alongside targeted observations according to the guidelines provided by your program manager.
Submit to the CTY program manager an electronic version of a final course syllabus that follows CTY guidelines and reflects what you actually covered during the course. The syllabus should be sufficiently detailed for outside audiences (such as school administrators) to understand the scope and level of the course.
After the Completion of the Virtual Course:
Be available throughout the academic year for discussion of the program or of particular students. Occasionally, instances arise in which the CTY program manager needs further details of a student’s work or of conversations (if any) with a student’s parents. Furthermore, CTY staff may wish to discuss the course you taught as they plan for future sessions. Be sure that the program manager has an address, telephone number, and email address where you can be reached during the upcoming academic year.

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in economics, political science, international relations, game theory, history or a related field is required.
At least two years of related experience is required, such as instruction or tutoring of adolescent students.
Additional (graduate) education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
Master’s degree is preferred.
Required Special Skills and Knowledge:
Advanced knowledge of course(s) and exam content for applicable grades
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Positive, proactive, and professional written and spoken communication skills using various technology is critical.
Must be very student-oriented.
Ability to prepare lesson plans and audio-visual aids per the agreed-upon course syllabus.
Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
Experience working in CTY Summer Programs is preferred

Physical Requirements for the Job:
Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
Dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery.
The incumbent will be required to communicate regularly face to face with internal and external customers and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings.
Position also requires a degree of mobility common to working in an office environment; bending, kneeling or standing during events and presentations may be required.
Must provide own laptop computer for use.
Must have access to broadband internet.
