Trains the staff in departmental procedures. Participates in colony health monitoring, animal import/export coordination. Provides treatment for sick animals as directed by veterinarian, Oversees post-approval monitoring (PAM). Monitors and maintains the physical plant for Animal Facilities. Maintain inventory levels for all husbandry supplies in the assigned facility. Oversees the maintenance of animal documentation to ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies. Interact with Principal Investigators to provide timely support services. Facilitates Vivarium access for new research staff. Possesses interpersonal communication skills to interact with the vivarium director, staff and investigators. Assists the Vivarium Director with day to day duties, performs other duties as assigned by the Director. This position requires cross institutional coverage responsibilities. This position reports to Vivarium Director.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

-Defines expected outcome and time of completion clearly to the employee
-Communicates the objective of the assignment to the employee
-Institutes appropriate follow-up with the employee to ensure that the desired outcome is reached
-Assigns work in order to accomplish goals in a timely fashion
-Allocates resources appropriately so that task can be accomplished and distributes assignments equitably
-Monitors manpower and efficiencies; makes necessary adjustments and reassignments according to workload demands
-Completes and maintains all timekeeping records
-Supervision Staff: Evaluates and documents staff performance, records and reports personnel counseling.
-Recognizes the need to counsel subordinates and reports it to their supervisor
-Explains to the employee clearly what his/her responsibilities are and the standard of performance
-Offers guidance for improving performance to the employee
-Brings to the employee's attention areas of performance improvement as soon as recognized with a plan and time frame for correction
-Approaches the evaluation process constructively and conducts it in accordance with Human Resources, departmental guidelines and procedures
-Staff Development: Trains the staff in departmental procedures and encourages staff development.
-Writing of Standard Operating Procedures for all Husbandry areas
-Ensures that policies and procedures are up-to-date, well organized, and easily accessible
-Encourages staff to pursue higher education, Certifications and seek professional growth. AALAS certification at various levels
-Distributes educational material/literature to the staff as it becomes available
-Trains staff effectively and maintain detailed records of performance and training status
-Physical Environment: Monitors the animal research housing and support areas for safe environment, conduct of research, and proper/safe disposal of materials involved in research.
-Provides a safe working environment for all employees, investigators, and their staff.Monitors safety records on an ongoing basis, investigates accidents, and correct safety hazards
-Oversees the maintenance of major equipment such as rack washers, autoclaves, tunnel washers, automatic watering systems, Ventilated racks, etc
-Plans and monitors sanitation, nutrition, and caging of animals to ensure compliance with departmental standards
-Maintenance of Physical Plant: Monitors and maintains the physical plant for Animal Facilities.
-Maintains a current awareness of regulatory requirements pertaining to environmental and plant conditions for housing of animals
-Reports all environmental and plant conditions that is inappropriate in a timely fashion
-Meets with Plant and Maintenance Representatives and outlines needs and/or necessary repairs
-Establishes or maintains Maintenance Contracts for all equipment in the facility
-Liaison with environmental, health, and safety personnel to address relevant EH&S issues in the animal care facility
-Inventory Files: Maintains inventory levels for all husbandry supplies in the assigned facility.
-Determines appropriate level of food, bedding, cage wash, chemicals, caging accessories, etc. as needed
-Evaluates existing equipment to assess feasibility: makes recommendations for modifications or upgrade as needed.
-Oversees the receipt and housing of animals. Coordinates the logging, arrangement of available housing facilities, proper care, and identification to ensure efficiency and regulatory compliance.
-Regulatory Compliance: Oversees the maintenance of documentation for animal maintenance to ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies.
-Maintains a current awareness of governmental regulatory and peer review requirements and guidelines
-Maintains physical plant according to department, USDA, NIH, AAALAC, and related federal, state and local guidelines. Initiates corrective action, if necessary
-Accompanies inspectors/auditors from USDA, AAALAC, or other governmental agencies and provides relevant documentation as requested
-Liaison with principal Investigators: Interacts with Principal Investigators to provide timely support services.
-Alerts the Veterinary Staff of animal health related matters, individual animals in pain or distress or experiments causing problems related to the animal's well-being
-Provides assistance to investigators with specific problems on equipment, caging, and animal husbandry
-Responds to changes as they occur in research testing schedules. Provides timely, high quality, and other complex responses on short notice to meet quality, and other complex response(s) on short notice to meet research needs.
-Ensures that Principal Investigators comply with guidelines concerning removal of an animal from the facilities area
-Animal care, biosecurity and PAM:
-Assures timely notification of the research staff about sick animal
-Oversees the animal health record keeping
-Provides treatment to sick animal as prescribed by veterinarian
-Coordinates animal import and export
-Oversees and participates in colony health monitoring
-Oversees post-approval monitoring (PAM)
-Maintains inventory for drugs, disposal of expired drugs and records the usage of controlled drugs
-Schedules and participates in research staff training.

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university with course work related to biomedical research, AALAS certification (LATg) is required, a candidate without LATg certification, is expected to obtain LATg certification within 1-2 years of employment; Possessing CVT, ACVT, CMAR is a plus; Experience in a supervisory or lead role; Ability to report to work after hours, weekend, holidays in case of emergencies such as animal health issues, power loss, heating/air conditioning loss, alarms; Experience working with laboratory animals including rodent, large animals and performing related technical manipulations; Ability to lift and carry up to 40-50 lbs; Ability to keep detailed and accurate computer records; Experience in Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word & Excel).
