Under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator, the laboratory technician performs a variety of both routine and complex research laboratory procedures in accordance with established standards and protocols. This individual is expected to acquire a level of knowledge to properly analyze results, especially where results are abnormal or atypical. Specific duties may vary according to project assigned.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
Perform laboratory tests, experiments, and equipment maintenance by following established protocols or with appropriate instruction.
Uses basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the laboratory.
Performs a variety of research laboratory techniques with primary focus on cell biology.
Prepares and determines suitability of solutions and reagents following defined formulas and procedures.
Documents and reports all experimental results. Completes required logs and supporting documents.
Maintains and troubleshoots equipment, routine repairs or notifying service personnel when more complex problems occur.
Performs related general duties such as ordering supplies, general lab housekeeping, and maintaining safety records.
Follows Good Laboratory Practices.
Identify and report problems in completion of routine lab processes.
Careful record keeping of sample information and results to guarantee quality of experimentation.
Minimum qualifications (mandatory):
High School diploma/GED required with some science coursework.
Experience working in a lab environment or undergraduate laboratory experience related to normal course requirements.
Related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
Training Certificate from Technical Institute preferred.
Certificate from technical institute or internship experience preferred.
Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
