The Office of Medical Student Curriculum (OMSC) delivers the highest quality four-year Doctor of Medicine curriculum for the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In support of the OMSC’s mission, the Instructional Designer advises and assists faculty, teaching assistants, and others in the identification and effective use of innovative teaching and assessment strategies and, where appropriate, instructional technologies. The Instructional Designer leads or serves as a contributing member of project teams that develop new curriculum and/or educational technology resources, and serves on academic and technical committees to contribute to the expansion of the institution's knowledge base for education practice, education research, and instructional technology enhancement objectives. The Instructional Designer reports to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education (UME), and is an integral part of the OMSC. The position works closely with all members of the OMSC, the Office of Assessment and Evaluation, and the Office of Academic Computing, along with educational leaders (deans, directors, vice provosts, faculty, etc.) across the Johns Hopkins University, as well as medical students and staff.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Manage and implement instructional technologies to support the curriculum and instruction. Examples include:
managing and implementing online testing
generating and interpreting student and test performance analysis reports
identifying and advocating for potential exam improvements
creating and administering course evaluations
creating and administering narrative assessments
developing online virtual patients simulation cases to supplement classroom instruction
maintaining the interactive curriculum website
generating and analyzing curriculum inventory reports
collaborating with education leaders to evaluate implementation of new elements of the curriculum
evaluating new educational technologies to meet current and emerging curricular needs
identifying and advocating for innovative pedagogical techniques and uses of technologies as instructional tools
Develop faculty and graduate teaching assistants in instructional techniques and educational technologies, to include developing and providing workshops, individual consultation, and online resources. Examples of topics include:
course syllabus development
effective lecture delivery techniques
active learning strategies
student feedback during and outside of class
student assignments (individual and collaborative)
use of digital video and audio to enhance instruction
facilitating online discussion and collaboration
Serve as lead project on educational initiatives that embed new pedagogical techniques and/or educational technologies to enhance teaching and learning. Project team members might include faculty, software developers, web developers, graphic designers, students, vendors, etc.
Initiate and write pedagogical sections of proposals to foundations, government agencies, or private donors
Develop formative and summative assessment plans
Research, identify, evaluate, and recommend innovative pedagogical strategies and new educational technology resources
Represent the School of Medicine on University-wide committees and in public forums
Communicate and disseminate innovative and effective teaching practices to internal and external communities.
Minimum Qualifications (Required)
Bachelor’s degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, or related field
Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in course design and development, faculty training, or program/course assessment/evaluation required.
Advanced degree may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Master’s degree and at least five (5) years related experience strongly preferred.

Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging instructional technologies required
Experience with a four-year medical education curriculum preferred
Experience teaching in a higher education environment preferred
Demonstrated knowledge of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation standards, Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Curriculum Inventory and Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs), and AAMC Physician Competencies Reference Set (PCRS) strongly preferred
