Academic advisers work to provide exemplary service to students, offering support and direction, as they navigate their experience at Carey. Through academic planning and resource connection, academic advisers aim to facilitate student success, retention & completion, with the ultimate goal of creating self-directed business leaders. This position requires the ability to occasionally work a flexible schedule and travel to other campuses as necessary. Will directly interact with Director of Academic Advising, Academic Program Managers, Academic Program Directors and other faculty lead as well as other advisers in the Office of Education; Directors and managers of other Carey Business School units; Current students to provide counsel regarding academic planning, curriculum requirements, personal goals, concentration or elective course selection, and connection to student resources.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Academic Advising- Direct Work with Students
Help students navigate their academic experience by assisting with proactive academic planning, creative problem solving, and connection to student resources
Conduct individual advising sessions via phone, skype, or in-person meetings
Conduct group advising sessions, advising workshops, and/or co-sponsor events with faculty and other Carey offices
Document student meetings and notes in student information database
Conduct mandatory introductory advising sessions/group advising sessions via phone, skype or in-person meeting
Create and maintain an individualized academic plan for each student that matches his or her unique needs and goals
Present advising workshop and participate in other activities at New Student Orientation
Advise students on registration, course selection, academic programs, and concentration selection
Provide early interventions identifying and communicating with “at-risk” students identified by faculty in each academic term
With the purpose of facilitating student success and retention, track student progress by running reports, analyzing student data, and communicating with students regarding registration, grades, and graduation
Provide a response within two business days to student e-mails and telephone calls
Make available evening and Saturday advising hours if necessary
Assist students with matching career goals and course offerings/concentrations
Coach students through the grade appeal process, student grievance procedure, and similar processes and requests
Meet with academic probation students and reinstated suspension students to conduct a self-assessment and academic success plan
Communicate with students to promote Carey events, services, clubs, and organizations
Utilize degree audit as primary academic planning tool and encourage students to access tool for self-service
Utilize degree audit technology to conduct and approve graduation audits
Participation in regularly scheduled Adviser meetings
Establish and work on goals intended to improve the academic advising office
Serve on school-wide committees and attend major campus events (i.e., graduation, orientation, residencies, student award ceremonies).
Utilize campus-specific modes of communication, e.g., using screen announcements to inform students of Carey efforts, events, changes, etc.
Make suggestions based on data and student feedback on how to improve Office of Education processes
Maintain good relations with other Johns Hopkins Schools and students
Assist with planning course schedules based on student needs
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university required, with a preference for concentration in counseling, social work, higher education, or business.
Minimum of 3 years of related experience is required
Experience with higher education advising preferred.
Experience in other state higher education systems is desirable.
Knowledge of graduate business curriculum preferred.

Strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to draft and prepare original correspondence

Proficiency in microcomputer software applications and other student software tools.

Proficiency with databases and spreadsheets
Proactive in terms of seeking information to keep current on changes in procedures, requirements, etc. and developing proposed solutions for challenges encountered
Background or educational experience in counseling, social work, student affairs, or higher education strongly preferred
