The Institute for Quantitative Health Science and Engineering (IQ) at Michigan State University is seeking a Research Assistant III. The successful candidate will manage the operations of the microscopy core at IQ, train new users, and work closely with the faculty and lab staff in IQ.
Job duties include, but are not limited to:
Operate and maintain the instruments in the IQ microscopy core including a Leica SP8 single photon confocal microscope, a Leica SP8 confocal + multiphoton microscope, an Olympus super-resolution microscope, a Delta-vision microscope, custom built light sheet and other microscopes that are added to the core over time.
Provide guidance on appropriate microscopes and approaches for users and their experiments.
Work with Leica personnel and IQ faculty to ensure the aims of the Center of Excellence are met.
Produce white papers on novel systems and approaches to be provided to Leica for distribution.
Contribute to grant applications for IQ faculty who incorporate microscopy into their proposals.
Work with Leica, and other vendors, to set up beta tests of tests of new instruments, coordinate user seminars and guide instrument selection.
Help with sample preparations for Electron Microscopy experiments and where appropriate, performing experiments on the EM and cryo-EM systems.
Train new users on the instruments.
Organize and coordinate hourly use and working with finance on billing procedures and payments.
Work with vendors on scheduling maintenance.
Advise IQ faculty on new instrument purchases to meet the needs of the core.
To this end, knowledge of fluorescence microscopy instruments including laser scanning confocal microscopes, spinning disk confocal microscopes, multiphoton microscopes, and Electron Microscopy imaging systems is a must. Image analysis expertise is also required. Experience imaging living systems (cells, tissues, and animals) is preferred.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired through completion of one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Master's in the specific field of research employment; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in research methodologies, writing reports, supervision, software, data interpretation and handling in area related to research being performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and may require special licensing or certification in the field related to the area of employment.
Desired qualifications include a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences, or a related field; at least one to two years of hands-on experience in microscopy ; previous experience of managing and operating microscopes independently; broad understanding of light microscopy, electron microscopy and relevant equipment and technologies used for Biomedical Research; cooperative, enthusiastic and team-oriented individual with good organizational and troubleshooting skills, attention to detail and thoroughness in record keeping; ability to take initiative in maintaining, and improving microscopy operations; excellent oral and written communication skills; minimum 2 year commitment.
