The System Engineer is responsible for the design, organization, planning and implementation of cutting-edge technology for a large HPC center.
Major Job Responsibilities:
Proven working experience in installing, configuring and troubleshooting Linux/UNIX based environments;
Support, maintain, and manage IT services, including networking, IT security, email, and disaster recovery;
Provide advanced technical support for desktop, server, and networking issues;
Ensure that all IT services are properly maintained and upgraded, including anti-virus, backups, imaging, and patching;
Provide subject matter expertise for both hardware and software;
Monitor and manage all installed systems and infrastructure;
Establish, configure, test and maintain operating systems, application software and system management tools;
Setting, installing testing and maintaining operating systems, application software and system management tools;
Evaluate existing systems, provide the technical direction to IT support staff;
Help plan and implement systems upgrades as required for better efficiency;
Ensure that security systems maintain data safety;
Oversee the constant availability of technical resources;
Maintain and supervise the inventory;
Timely reporting on tickets for the rapid response to users;
Develop and maintain relationships with vendors for the latest technology advances, keep staff up to date with developments;
The candidate will have direct interaction with team members in support of management.
Position reports to the Assistant Director of Finance & Administration.
Position supervises the System Administrator.
Five years related experience.
Additional experience can be substituted for education and additional education can be substituted for experience according to the JHU formula.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field or Master’s degree preferred.
3+ years’ experience in computer systems management and network administration.
Proven track record of installing, configuring, and troubleshooting UNIX-based systems.
Experience creating scripts (e.g. using Perl, Ruby, Python) and setting up software for automation.
Special Knowledge Skills & Abilities:
The candidate must have excellent customer-facing written and verbal communication and technical skills.
Exceptional knowledge of networking technologies (OSI network layers, TCP/IP).
Familiarity with administration, performance tuning, and system monitoring
Familiarity with NetApp storage devices including ONTAP.
U.S. citizenship is required.
Security clearance preferred.
