The Life Sciences Institute (LSI) of the University of Michigan has the following part-time (20 hours per week) position open in its Mass Spectrometry Core. The minimum salary listed is based on a full-time rate of $48,000.
Duties generally include, but are not limited to, assisting with the routine operation and maintenance of the LC/MS (Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry), including three Agilent Mass Spectrometers, and an Agilent LC/CD (Liquid Chromatography/Circular Dichroism Spectroscopy) instrumentation. This position will function closely under a supervisor. The detailed job responsibilities are described below:
Prepare sample and solutions for the operation of HPLC (High-performance Liquid Chromatography) instrumentation;
Check routine instrument performance on a daily basis during weekdays, replenish instrument solvents, organize instrument logbooks on operation and maintenance, order lab supplies and parts;
Assist in trouble-shooting and repair of the instrumentation. Communicate instrument issues with Agilent Technical Support team;
Conduct experiments on instruments, data analysis and data interpretation under supervision;
Assist in the lab safety and regulatory compliance working closely with Environment Health & Safety (EHS). Communicate with EHS to handle solvent waste disposal.
Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry/Biochemistry/Biology/Chemical Engineering or related field;
Basic laboratory training and skills in following protocols for sample/solution preparation and instrument operation;
Reliable and attentive to details, team player, responsive to the daily priorities;
Laboratory safety awareness;
Interest in HPLC and LC/MS;
Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of research users including undergraduate/graduate students/postdoc fellows/staff.
Master’s degree in Chemistry/Biochemistry/Biology/Chemical Engineering or related field;
1-3 years of experience in HPLC, Mass Spectrometry and/or LC/MS;
Experience with solvent waste disposal;
Knowledge of laboratory safety requirements and regulatory compliance.
