As part of the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) department, the Fire Safety team provides training and maintenance of guidelines and procedures sought to assure the safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. We are seeking a Fire Safety Manager to join the EH&S team. This is an excellent opportunity if you thrive in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by providing management and direction to CMU's Fire and Life Safety programs along with supporting Emergency Response programs. Your work contributes to the health and safety of our campus community through effective partnership with university officials, staff, and students to assist them in adhering with the terms and conditions of the university's programmatic commitments. In this role, you will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory obligations regarding building code and life safety.
Core responsibilities will include:
Managing the activities of, and providing mentorship to, a small team of technicians.
Leading, motivating and encouraging a safety-conscious culture to reduce incidents and injuries.
Developing, coordinating, managing, and implementing all fire and life safety programs throughout the University to ensure compliance with all applicable local, state and federal laws, regulations and standards.
Consulting with various university staff and students to build effective partnerships and alliances
Overseeing and participating in the construction, renovation and demolition plan review process related to fire and life safety, fire alarm systems, and fixed and portable fire protection equipment.
Directing evacuation drills at all university locations, including off campus buildings.
Witnessing fire protection acceptance and annual testing.
Supervising fireworks displays.
Conducting building safety audits and coordinating with the monitoring company to assure fire alarm system reporting functionality.
Attending meetings pertaining to various construction projects.
Conducting surveillance and incident investigations, and providing recommendations to correct unsafe practices.
Providing as-needed 24/7 on-call support to authorize fire alarm systems to be placed "on hold" during service and testing.

You should demonstrate:
An ability to solve problems, influence others, and show dedication to campus safety through improvement of sound fire and life safety practices.
Advanced or expert knowledge of fire and life safety applications of local, state, and federal laws, codes, regulations, standards, specifications, and policies, including Pennsylvania Fire Prevention Code, International Fire Code, IBC codes and NFPA standards and methodologies.
A track record of success working with contractors and vendors supporting mutual safety objectives.
A collaborative approach who cooperates with others without dominating the group, values team members for their contributions and professional abilities, and always treats people with respect.
Capability to communicate ideas respectfully, honestly and clearly, and considers the suggestions and opinions of others.
Proven ability to supervise and train personnel.
Strong organization, negotiation, and planning skills.
Bachelor's degree in fire safety or equivalent related field experience required; Master's degree in Fire Science, engineering, or equivalent related field experience preferred.
Minimum five years of fire safety management and emergency planning; experience in a university setting, research facility, hospitals, or with an insurance company preferred.
Certified Fire Safety Inspector, Certified Fire Protection Specialist, or Certified Building Inspector or equivalent with experience in review/enforcement of ICC or IBC highly desired.
Experience developing, writing, and implementing fire prevention and life safety programs/policies preferred.
