Department: ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY - 062035 Department Description: The EH&S Office is responsible for encouraging safe and healthful working conditions for all UC Davis staff, faculty, visitors and students. Within EH&S, the Health and Safety unit provides specialized services in all areas of occupational and environmental compliance and protection.

Job Summary: Under supervision, serves as an Associate Chemical Hygiene Officer (ACHO) for UC Davis. Promotes the prevention of occupational injuries or illnesses from chemical and other hazards in the laboratory and other research- related environments. Completes laboratory accident and incident investigation, identifies corrective actions, and documents Lessons Learned. Facilitates reporting and dissemination of Near-Miss information. Supports and augments the campus chemical safety and laboratory safety programs. Provides technical guidance to faculty, staff, and students in the development and implementation of the campus Chemical Hygiene Plan, Laboratory Safety Plans, and Standard Operating Procedures. Assists EH&S and research personnel with hazard recognition, risk assessment, and development of control and mitigation strategies.
Physical Demands: Wear personal protective equipment.
Lift and move equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
Climb ladders reaching up to 10 feet or more in height.
Work Environment: Employee is personally responsible for following UC Davis health and safety guidelines/instructions/policies and procedures
Subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
Participate in departmental 'on-call', both during regular hours (8 am - 5 pm) and after hours (5pm - 8 am) team rotation to provide technical information and response to the campus.
Work with or be in areas where hazardous materials, radioactive materials and/or infectious diseases are present.
Work in demanding Environmental Health and Safety Department with multiple deadlines, frequent interruptions, and noise from competing activities.
Work flexible schedule and occasional overtime to meet operational needs
Possess valid California Driver's license.

Minimum Qualifications: B.S./BA degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Hygiene or Public Health, or equivalent combination of education and work experience in related field.
Minimum of 2 years professional experience managing an academic research safety program (e.g., laboratory safety officer, department safety officer, college safety officer, etc.).
Knowledge/understanding and experience in identification, evaluation, and control of hazards associated with chemical handling, storage, transportation, use and disposal in a research university environment.
Solid laboratory hazard recognition and risk assessment experience..
Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills to interact with customers, convey technical information in lay terms, interpret and advise on regulations and laws, conduct training and educational programs, and develop detailed compliance reports and correspondence. ______________________________________________________
Preferred Qualifications: Advanced degree in Chemistry or an applied-chemistry field (e.g., Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Computational Chemistry, Environmental Science), or equivalent combination of education and work experience in related field.
Minimum 4 years chemistry (organic and inorganic) and more than three years of directly applicable experience with safety management.
Advanced level of knowledge and experience with broad-based laboratory experience in an academic research environment.
Knowledge of environmental, occupational safety and health principles and their applications; knowledge of environmental and occupational health and safety laws, codes and regulations.
Experience collecting and interpreting chemical exposure monitoring data.
Experience managing hazards associated with Engineered Nanomaterials.
Advanced political acumen and skill to effectively communicate with diverse constituencies in a highly political environment.
Skill to effectively represent the campus to state and federal authorities, and community groups.
Experience conducting training on technical topics for a diverse audience.
Experience collaborating on multi-disciplinary projects.
