Fire Safety Systems Trades Specialist I - Facilities & Services 12208
The Environmental Health and Safety unit of the Division of Facilities and Services at West Virginia University is seeking applications for two (2) Fire Safety Systems Trades Specialist I positions. The Fire Safety Systems Technicians (FSST) perform maintenance, testing, inspection, system upgrades, response, and new installation of fire safety systems components to assure life safety codes and compliance for all WVU buildings on main campus, regional campuses and WVU farms.
In order to be successful in these positions, the ideal candidates will:
Inspect, test, and maintain building fire alarm systems annually as required by WV State Fire Code SFC 87 and NFPA 72.
Perform upgrades to existing fire alarm systems, including device replacement, electrical wiring circuit upgrades, adding new devices to system, and programming as applicable and required.
Perform routine monthly pump maintenance, to include fluid levels; battery charge level; and checking for loose bolts, water leaks, and general pump condition
Respond to location of all fire alarms, trouble signals, and supervisory signals to determine problems and render assistance by silencing alarms when necessary, making repairs or arranging with contractors to repair equipment when needed.
Interact with contractors, vendors, project managers, and regulatory personnel as needed to schedule maintenance, including replacement, repair, or installation of new fire and life safety equipment.
Receive and process facilities work orders using database and computer systems.
Respond during off hours to cover emergency situations.

Pay Grade: 13, WVU provides competitive wages for its employees, and takes experience and related education into consideration when determining appropriate salary.
High school diploma and technical/vocational training of up to 18 months beyond high school within the maintenance field or a related field.
At least two (2) years of experience in f ire alarm and sprinkler system maintenance and/or installation, l ow voltage electrical service, and fire extinguisher maintenance
Valid driver's license required for daily operation of fleet vehicles
WV Fire Protection Worker License (Portable Fire Extinguisher Technician)- WV State Fire Code Requirement
Backflow Preventer Certification within 2 years of hire
NICET certification- Level I in Fire Alarm Systems or Inspection and Testing of Water Based Fire Protection Systems within 1 year of hire
Sprinkler System Testing certification within 1 year of hire
Fire alarm Testing Certification within 1 year of hire
Physical demands include:
Ability to climb a ladder to heights over ten feet occasionally
Operate a man lift up to 50 feet rarely
Ability to work in inclement weather, extreme weather conditions and temperatures of WVU steam tunnels and coolers occasionally
Ability to handle materials over 51 pounds occasionally
Ability and coordination to stoop, bend, walk, crawl, etc., over rough or slippery surfaces occasionally
