Under general supervision, performs clinical and/or research laboratory experiments by following established procedures and protocols or with instruction. Uses basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab. Runs lab tests and completes measurements as assigned. Identifies and resolves common problems and uses analytical skills to implement assigned projects. Understands the role of senior lab members and accepts constructive guidance. Sets-up experiments based on defined standards. Collects and maintains project data. Uses computer programs to perform statistical analyses.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Follows routine protocols under the supervision and mentorship of a faculty investigator.
Performs laboratory tests and/or experiments following established procedures or protocols, which may include performing immunohistochemistal and in situ hybridization procedures on a Leica Bond RX.
Uses R and SQL to perform statistical analysis, along with database software to track results.
Utilizes a Hamamatsu XT and PerkinElmer Vectra, to scan stained slides along with inForm and HALO to analyze images.
Operates requisite laboratory equipment and instruments, records data, and perform laboratory tests, making minor adjustments as required.
Monitors inventory levels and orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures as required for experimental protocols.
May participate in planning experiments and evaluating/interpreting test results utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices.
Attends regularly scheduled lab meetings to discuss projects and experiments with other lab members and the investigator. Will be able to provide summaries of these projects and experiments as necessary.
Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments.
Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens. Complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources. Completes annual university biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety training, as appropriate, as well as other required online and in-person trainings and compliance requirements.
Monitors equipment performance and maintenance schedules. May perform routine repair or replacement of standard parts.

Laboratory environment - Exposure to toxins and infectious agents exist, but potential for personal injury or harm is minimized if established safety and health precautions are followed. Must refer to and are expected to comply with procedure manuals, follow proper laboratory protocols and safety policy/procedures, and be familiar with material data safety sheets in assigned work areas. Able to read and understand all Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) guidelines applicable to assigned work area. Working in laboratory where there may be discomforts due to odors, noise, temperature fluctuations, and working around lab equipment. Research areas may include animal, human, human products, DNA, radiation protocols, and other bio-hazardous materials. Use of personal protective equipment may be advised or required.
May transport equipment and supplies usually less than 40 pounds from one area to another (in the laboratory or on campus. May be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with proper training, or precautions/lifting aides (example: supply boxes or Formalin cubes). In some areas work space is limited.
Minimum Qualifications (mandatory): BS/BA or equivalent required, in biological sciences, chemistry, or physics. Preferred Qualifications:
Some laboratory work experience preferred. Basic computer language experience, including Python, R, and SQL, strongly preferred. Experience with the PerkinElmer Vectra and inForm software strongly preferred. Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must have a working knowledge of one or more of the following disciplines achieved through undergraduate studies, and laboratory experience gained through class work: biology, biochemistry, physics, microbiology and/or genetics. Knowledge of good lab practices required. Any specific physical requirements for the job:
Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
Standing in a stationary position 80% of the time. May need to traverse through the laboratory to or to retrieve equipment, supplies, or specimens from other locations on campus.
Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s).
Operates computer keyboard, laboratory instruments, and small laboratory tools such as pipettes, cutting instruments, glass tubes, dishes, and/or slides.
Constantly repositions self to perform duties at laboratory work stations, gathering specimens, and loading equipment.
Communication skills using the spoken word.
Ability to see within normal parameters and ability to hear within normal range. Prolonged vision requirements including viewing computer screen, paper reports/documents, charts and results. Visual acuity is required to distinguish fine gradation of color or structure and closely examine specimens (including via a microscope).
