Carnegie Mellon University, one of the world leaders in higher education and research, is seeking a Fire Safety Specialist to join the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) team. In this role, you will be an integral and highly-valued member of a team, responsible for assisting in coordinating and conducting inspections and drills, issuing operational permits, and authorizing fire and life safety systems throughout the university community.
Your core responsibilities will include:
Creating and maintaining emergency evacuation plans for campus buildings.
Facilitating the development and maintenance of the Floor Marshal Program.
Assisting and leading the annual, and follow-up, fire inspections of university properties.
Helping the Fire Safety Manager on research and compliance with applicable codes, policies, and university guidelines.
Participating in the development of hazard assessments and investigations.
Conducting acceptance testing for fire protection and fire detection with Architects, General Contractors, Subcontractors and University Project Managers.
Building inspections and documentation of existing Passive and Active components condition.
Providing fire safety education and training to the university community.
Writing and submitting reports as required.
Participating with Emergency Operations Planning and Exercise activities.
Assisting with Emergency Plan activation and coordination as necessary.
Working with federal, state and local regulatory agencies, as well as with other Universities and national organizations.

You should be able to work outside normal business hours as occasional evening and weekend hours may be needed.
Bachelor's degree in Safety, Industrial Engineering or related field AND two years of occupational safety experience; OR
Six years of occupational safety experience; OR
Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Fire Inspector II certification.
Fire Plans Reviewer/Examiner certification.
Hazardous Materials Awareness certification
ICC Commercial Building Inspector certification
Fire code enforcement and fire prevention inspection, and fire/life safety systems acceptance testing/certifying in accordance with applicable fire codes and standards.
Knowledge of ICC, NFPA, OSHA and ANSI codes, regulations and standards.
Able to work, walk, and climb ladders, stairs, vaults, ceilings, crawl spaces, and other limited access areas to inspect and test fire and life safety installations and conduct investigations in all areas of all buildings and building systems (investigations may require special protective equipment use for hazardous materials exposure incidents). Able to carry a minimum of 50 pounds of fire extinguisher equipment from vehicle to site location.
