The Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology is seeking a Physician Assistant (PA). The PA will assess each patient that presents to the center in crisis and will write orders for these patients. The Physician Assistant's assessment will include taking a history and physical. Will also write prescriptions for patients who have called in advance and then present to the center for refills. Will keep a running log of narcotics prescribed. The PA will be responsible for coordinating social work and psychiatry evaluations for patients in the center.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Work schedule is variable with 6 to 10 hour shifts.
Assist with providing comprehensive and episodic care to patients with sickle cell disease. This includes taking a history, completing a physical assessment and interpreting diagnostic tests.
Provide routine health maintenance for patients with sickle cell disease. This includes review of the patient chart and diagnostic information to assess that labs and radiologic testing are being completed as per protocol.
Sees and assists the primary medical team on sickle cell patients admitted to the hospital.
Propose and implement medical therapy and treatment plans for patients seen in the clinic and followed by collaborating physicians.
Provide chronic pain management, including having patients sign pain contracts, refilling medications, and tracking of prescribed narcotics.
Monitoring of patients while on therapy to evaluate for side effects and to evaluate for expected outcomes.
Adjusting and starting new medications as indicated by patient condition.
Counsels and teaches patients and family members in regard to disease process and expected outcomes.
Assist with the management of chronic transfusion patients.
Make referrals to other specialists as indicated by the patients' condition.
Dictate clinic notes and other pertinent data into EPR that is necessary in the care of the patient. Provide information to referring physicians.
Monitoring patients that are on hydroxyurea
Provide presentations on sickle cell disease for other health care professionals.
Coordinate and act as a sub-investigator in phase II, III and IV clinical trials. This includes preparing and submitting forms to the IRB. Enrolling patients into studies by completing health assessment and physical examinations. Reviewing lab work and diagnostic tests and making changes as indicated by lab results while following the protocol. This also includes potentially discontinuing a patient on a study for reasons of non-compliance or other issues.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree; Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body; Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program. Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Minimum of three years of related clinical PA experience required. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date JHU Equivalency: Experience may be considered in lieu of bachelor's degree. Licensure and Certifications:
Successful completion of the national certification examinations. Current CPR certification required.
Approval of the Board of Physician Quality Assurance for the written signed delegation agreement.
Familiarity with regulations and standards governing PAs in the State of Maryland.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Operates personal computer to access email, computerized scheduling and documentation databases, and other basic office support software. Strong oral and written communication skills required. Demonstrated ability for self-direction and initiation required. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team required. Demonstrated customer service skills required. Must be able to prioritize responsibilities and work in a fast-paced environment. Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications: Completes all required HIPAA and other specified online training courses. Successfully completes all necessary EPIC training courses and EPR and other applicable clinical software systems.
Physical Requirements:Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.
