About the Work Unit: Themission of the Mass Spectrometry Research Center (MSRC) is to bringstate-of-the-art mass spectrometry expertise, methodology, and instrumentationto the research and clinical infrastructure of the Vanderbilt UniversityMedical Center. The MSRC is located on the 9th floor in Medical ResearchBuilding III. The Mass Spectrometry Core Lab currently occupies about3,800 square feet of laboratory space on the 9th floor of the MRB III that iscontiguous with that occupied by the Proteomics Core (3,600 sq. ft.). Support for the facility comes from service cores affiliated with sevenNIH-funded Program Projects and Research Centers, service fees charged tounaffiliated investigators and direct institutional support from VanderbiltUniversity. The Research and Development laboratories of Dr. Capriolicomprise 5,500 sq. ft. within the MSRC including the Tissue Imaging/AnalysisCore.
The ProteomicsLaboratory resides within the Mass Spectrometry Research Center at VanderbiltUniversity and provides state-of the-art MS instrumentation and analyticalmethods to analyze proteins and proteomes. New, high performance MS instrumentsand expertise in multiple analytical approaches provide exceptional flexibilityin analytical proteomics approaches. These tools are integrated with powerfulbioinformatics tools to mine, filter and assemble proteomics data.
The mission of the MassSpectrometry Research Center (MSRC) is to bring state-of-the-art massspectrometry expertise, methodology, and instrumentation to researchers atVanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The ProteomicsCore lab (3,600 sq. ft.) has nine LC-MS/MS instruments, including two LTQ iontraps, five Q Exactive Orbitraps, an Orbitrap Velos with ETD, and a triplequadrupole mass spectrometer.
Key Functions andExpected Performance:
*Independentlyoversee research projects and perform near to totally independent research.
*Supervise, plan, design andimplement research projects
*Establish highly complexprotocol(s); define data collection, evaluation and analysis procedures
*Implementand initiate scientific data collection and analyses for research project(s)requiring independent interpretation of complex research data
*Exercisediscretion and independent judgment to develop methods and procedures foroperation of complex scientific equipment
*Supervise set-up and operation ofvarious scientific experiments involving complex apparatus and equipment
*Must beknowledgeable in use of various mass spectrometry instrumentation
*Orbitrap, Triple Quad MS, QExactiveand Linear ion trap MS experience required to run, maintain and troubleshootinstrumentation
*Must be able to use variousproteomic techniques in sample preparation and targeted SRM
*Responsiblefor plan and coordination of methods to develop Bioinformatics tools
*Develop computational proteomicstools to produce reports of results, graphs, charts, tables, etc. of researchfindings
*Accomplished in statisticalinterpretation and R scripting
*Mentor and teach graduate students,and post-doctoral fellows in developing their projects and on specifictechniques and protocols
*Train and supervise technical staff,medical and graduate students
*Provide technical guidance tostudents, post-doctoral fellows and faculty as required
*Contributeto research so as to merit serving as author or co-author on researchpublications, etc.
*Assist principal investigator inwriting research grants and contract proposals
*Assists PI in manuscript preparationfor scientific journals
*Present research findings as needed
*Open contact as needed withprincipal investigator, collaborating professionals, Purchasing, Human ResourceServices, Space and Facilities Planning, asset management personnel,Environmental Health and Safety, Institutional Review Board staff,administrative staff relating to budget capabilities
*Contact as required with sponsoringagencies and/or cooperating facilities (e.g. V.A.), collaborating professionalsand vendors
Thisposition does not have supervisory responsibility; this position reports to thePrincipal Investigator.
Profile ofan Ideal Candidate
Ph.D. in the physical or biological sciences is necessary
5 years of post-baccalaureate experience in the following isnecessary
Previous experience using HPLC - mass spectrometry, LC-MS and TOF-MS
Various sample prep workflows with mass spectrometry
Data analysis experience is highly preferred.
