The ALS is a dynamic national scientific user facility that provides thousands of scientists from around the world access to bright beams of x-rays, infrared, and extreme ultraviolet light for scientific studies and technology development in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. The ALS is a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades. The ALS-U project is a new project at LBNL that will ensure the facility's leadership in this field for the next decades. You will be part of the ALS-U Project Office and reports to the ALS-U Chief Engineer. You will be responsible for global engineering and design standards, and system integration for the ALS-U Project. The Lead System Engineer position requires a close working relationship with ALS-U Project System Managers, QA Manager, and Physics and Engineering Technical Leads throughout the project to define design review schedules, upholding design standards, requirements, and specification documents, interface control documents, and assumptions documents.
This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs; and skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate. This position will be filled in either the Mechanical or Electronic/Electrical discipline. This will depend on candidate skills and experience.
Provide overall development, leadership, and direction of the ALS-U Project's system engineering process. Act as the point-of-contact for ALS-U systems engineering, project-wide.
Work with System Managers to ensure specification and design across system boundaries are coordinated.
Develop and maintain a project-wide technical tracking system that captures all ALS-U technical specifications, interfaces, and assumptions.
Set and implement standards for engineering design, documentation, fabrication, installation and handover to ALS operations.
Develop and coordinate the design review process across the ALS-U project and ensure System Managers implement this process in a robust manner that is consistent with LBNL design review guidelines.
Evaluate the performance of the ALS-U design review process, and implement lessons learned, continuous improvement and best practices.
Coordinate with ALS-U EHS lead and ALS-U management on work safety, and support safe work practices.
Work closely with the ALS-U procurement team and technical leads on acquisition planning and effective execution of project-wide procurements by ensuring appropriate maturity of the requirements, QA documentation, interfaces, and design standards have been fulfilled.
Participate as a member of the ALS-U Change Control Board and Risk Management Team.
Report at regular team meetings, advisory committee meetings, and other venues.
5-years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 3 years and a Master's degree; or equivalent work experience.
Experience and knowledge in requirements and specification management, design review processes, system integration, configuration management, and risk management.
Experience in working in a medium to large scale multi-disciplinary project(s).
Experience building a team atmosphere involving multi-disciplinary personnel.
Demonstrated experience in advanced problem-solving and decision-making necessary to independently solve problems and make appropriate decisions.
Demonstrated medium to large-scale project experience in the role as a systems engineer, on one-of-a-kind, technically complex projects
Ability to exercise sound judgment in the application of graded approaches to systems engineering processes and standards
Familiarity with system engineering processes; demonstrated the ability to define system engineering processes, including developing requirements and interface definitions.
Demonstrated ability to monitor the level of standards adherence, and enforce standards and best practice processes, across medium to large size organizations
Demonstrated written and oral communication skills in authoring technical and scientific reports and publications.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with engineering staff, scientific staff, technical staff, external collaborators, and the highest levels of LBNL management.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Knowledge and understanding of particle accelerators and beamlines.
Significant DOE Order 413.3 project management experience.
Established connections and reputation with the national and international community in system engineering.

This is a 3-year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
