This position will oversee all aspects of the imaging Core Facility, including brightfield, fluorescence, and confocal microscopy. This position is responsible for the training of employees, supervisory oversight, annual budget, quarterly billing, ordering supplies and equipment. (Facility equipment valued in excess of $1M). Provides administrative and technical support to research activities. Responsible for scientific and administrative management of Research laboratory. A thorough understanding of scientific theory, principles and oversight of laboratory documentation.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
Performs routine and advanced laboratory research activities such as: preparing solutions, media, stains and buffers; cultures and specimens; autoradiogram and photomicrographs, animal surgery, recombinant DNA techniques, oxidation and transport assays using radio labeled compounds, protein purification etc., Administers day-to-day laboratory operations including monitoring the budget, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, overseeing laboratory maintenance, and ordering of supplies. Performs independent projects. Compiles, analyzes, and interprets research data and/or test information and research techniques; and records/reports results. May prepare and assist with the preparation of manuscripts, scientific illustrations, and journal articles and grant proposals.
Responsible for all aspects of research within the laboratory. Knows the formal and informal laboratory goals, standards, policies and procedures. Requires familiarity with others in the department as well as other Divisions involved in scientific endeavors.
Is sensitive to the interrelationship of both people and functions within the department. Excellent interpersonal and managerial skills are required. Ability to use consultative approach to resolve issues in the area of responsibility.
On a regular and continuous basis, exercise scientific and administrative judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs and/or research success.
Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Comprehensive knowledge of research techniques. Comprehensive understanding and utilization of scientific and technical language and symbols. Must have leadership and team building skills. Must have skills in programming statistical and data analysis systems using SPSS, SAS, and other computer software.
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or other related field, and a minimum of four years of related experience performing relevant techniques. Additional education may substitute for some experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
