The District of Muskoka is seeking a professional and accomplished leader to join our Engineering & Public Works (EPW) management team to lead the delivery of the District’s waste management services and environmental compliance programs.

Reporting to the Commissioner EPW, the Director will create the vision for this division and provide the leadership and guidance to advance our waste management services to support responsible and practical environmental initiatives. Leading a team of approximately 14 employees plus additional seasonal staff, this Director’s key areas of responsibility include:

  • Strategic planning related to waste management services and diversion strategies
  • People leadership and guidance
  • Innovation and continuous improvement
  • Contractor and consultant management
  • Financial management, including operational and capital budgeting for the division
  • Relationship management with both internal and external stakeholders

Our waste management operations consist of 10 waste diversion locations (landfill/ transfer stations) along with seasonal bins sites and waste depots. We also have responsibility for managing numerous closed landfill sites throughout Muskoka.  As the Upper Tier Regional Municipality, we manage the waste collection services for all six Area Municipalities that make up Muskoka.

As a Professional Engineer (PEng), C.E.T. or C.Tech, with a degree in Applied Science, Environmental or Civil Engineering, you will have developed your leaderships skills by spending 7-10 years in a directly related role pertaining to infrastructure, environmental services and solid waste management. This will include a minimum of 3-4 years of progressive management experience in the field. 

You are accustomed to working with/ managing contractor and consultant relationships, and you have the ability to successfully navigate relationships with varying stakeholders, often with competing interests. You are comfortable presenting to Council and have high political acuity, exceptional communication skills and a collaborative leadership style. 

You will have a proven history of introducing innovation and continuous improvement to the teams you have led – challenging your teams to think of new and creative ways to address the issues at hand. Your enthusiasm and passion will help continue to advance the teams’ efforts to educate the public about waste management practices and why they are important in Muskoka.
